The ambulance rushed Crystal to the hospital. Tasha's mom stayed close behind it in her car and Tasha and I rode in the ambulance with Crystal. Crystal's screams had stopped and her face was getting paler by the minute. The life was fading from her face and her eyes were wide open and turning lighter. They almost looked possessed. Her body still trembled. Beads of sweat formed rapidly on her forehead and the blood from her wounds dried up on her skin. Some flaked off onto the bed. She started to blink over and over again. Tasha stared at her in fear. "What's wrong with her?" I shook my head. "I don't know." Even though I hadn't even known her for very long, this girl felt like a friend and I felt terrible having to see her the way she was. Just then her hand bolted up and grabbed my arm, her skin was feverishly hot. Her eyes were extra wide. "Get...get away." Tasha and I stared at her in confusion. "Crystal what are you talking about?" To my surprise I managed to sound extremely calm. "Something...something's h-happening to m-me." she whispered.
"I don't know if it's a good idea for you to stay." I shook my head. "Crystal what are you talking about? Everything's gonna be fi-" Her eyes suddenly rolled to the back of her head and she began shaking uncontrollably fast. Her eyes flicked down to me and I jumped back in shock as I stared into her golden eyes. Yes. Golden. Bright yellowish orbs of gold staring wide eyed at me. "GO!" she exclaimed as small needle like fangs sprouted from her teeth then rapidly slipped back into her gums.
I stayed where I was and Tasha looked ready to faint. Almost just as suddenly as it started, the shaking stopped. Crystals body went completely still, her eyes closed, the color rapidly draining out of her face. I saw her eyes go back to their natural blue just as her eyelids hid them from view. "Hurry!" I yelled at the driver.
He stepped on the gas and I was tossed to the side as we went swerving around other cars from lane to lane.Once in the hospital, Tasha and I watched as Crystals body was wheeled into the emergency room. Twitching, drooling, and dark purple foam oozing out of her mouth. Her head whipped from side to side every few seconds. We waited for hours in the waiting room holding hands and I whispered prayers under my breath. I wanted to cry which seemed strange to me since I just met this girl. Tasha stared blankly at a wall in deep in thought. She was reconsidering helping me out. It was obvious. I mean, I can't blame her. It was to much to handle. That could have been her in that hospital bed. My mom came rushing into the hospital and embraced me in a hug. "Im so glad your alright." She put a hand on Tasha's shoulder. "You two feeling ok?" We nodded, Tasha still staring at the wall. "Well come on. I'll take you guys home." She looked down at Tasha still staring at the wall. "Tasha, would you like to sleep over tonight?," my mom asked. She didn't respond for a few seconds. Then she nodded her head and said: "Yes please." I took her hand and she slowly stood, only staring straight in front of her. I stared at Tasha but she never turned to look at me. "Alright then," my mom said breaking the silence. "I'll call your mother and let her know. Let's go." As we walked out I noticed a doctor talking to a police officer. I only picked up a few sentences they said. "It's the same as the little girl," the doctor said. "The poison is sinking in deeper and deeper. Also it's spreading like a disease all over the patients body. This is poison unlike any I've ever seen before. It seems to be taking over the minds of both patients. The younger girl is showing signs of unusual behavior, frantic movements, and change in eye color. The older girl seems to be showing these symptoms more rapidly including strange purple liquid exiting her body through the mouth. Both seem to be in extreme pain. It's almost as though..." The rest of his words were drowned out as I stepped outside into the windy, unusually cold, night.
When we arrived at my house Tasha headed strait for the bathroom to get ready for bed. "Hey Daija can I borrow some clothes?" she shouted from upstairs. "Sure thing, I'll be right up." I felt relieved. It was the first thing she had said after leaving the hospital. My mom pulled me aside into the kitchen. "Daija is everything alright? You both have been acting very strange. Tasha's mom told me what happened at her house. Did you know that girl?" I shook my head. She lifted my chin and stared into my eyes with intense concern written all over her face. "Sweet heart you know you can tell me anything right?" I nodded. She planted a gentle kiss in my forehead. "Alright then why don't you go take care of your friend." I forced a smile. "Ok." She turned towards the kitchen and started taking things out to make super. "You hungry?" I nodded. "How does milk and cookies sound?" "Sure. And mom?" She turned to look at me. "Yeah?"
"Thanks...for everything."
She flashed a smile and I fought the urge to tell her everything. I walked into my room and pulled out some pajamas for Tasha when suddenly she screamed from upstairs. "Daija!" I raced upstairs and burst through the bathroom door. Tasha stood there staring outside the bathroom window with her towel tightly wrapped around her. "D-Daija. Come here please." I slowly walked towards the window. "Why what's-" I was cut off by the sight I saw outside. The monster stood outside with a wide smile on his face and its head tilted to the side. It waved its pale hand at the window, long fingers wiggling, and talons flashing in the moonlight. I slammed the window shut and pulled the blinds shut. "Come on Tasha. Lets get you downstairs." She turned to me eyes wide. "Is it safe?" I nodded and wrapped and arm around her and we walked downstairs. "Everything alright?" my mother shouted from the kitchen. "Yeah were fine." I answered. Tasha sat down on my bed and stared at the door. She motioned for me to sit next to her. I sat down and she hugged me tight. I hugged her back and we sat there rocking back and forth. "Daija," Tasha whispered. "Yeah?" I whispered back. "Will we be ok?" I thought for a second. "Yeah. For now." She looked up at me. "Don't worry. We'll figure something out."
I sure hope so, I thought.
