.....................
You know those moments where you wake up hoping that you are somewhere different and that everything that happened before you woke up was a dream? I woke up looking at a dark ceiling hoping that I was home. I would look down to find Bella curled up next to me because she had trouble sleeping. My mom would yell from downstairs telling us to wake up and get ready for school any minute now.But as I looked around, I only felt great disappointment as I saw the sight I hadn't wanted to see. Rain poured outside the hospital and thunder clapped cheering on the lightning stretching across the pitch black sky. Lights were flickering on and off, patients were getting wheeled in and out of rooms, and I sat up in bed with a giant headache looking out at the madness from my opened door. Nurses shouted directions at surgeons, confused doctors, and other nurses. More and more people arrived on beds with nasty wounds like scratches, broken bones, dislocated limbs, 3rd degree burns, etc. I think something like a giant car accident happened. Trees were snapping in half and falling on cars and roads. Somewhere a bridge was beginning to break down and some cars had spilled over the side. The TV outside was cranked up to full volume so I could here everything those stupid reporters, with their fake smiles and boring voices, were saying. My nurse was nowhere to be found. I slid out of bed and stood up nearly falling to the ground as my head throbbed with pain. My legs were wobbly and walking was difficult so I laid back down. The lights were off in my bedroom, the only light was coming from the opened door. No one was around and a platter of food sat on a table next to me. Not the best thing to wake up to. I closed my eyes trying to fall back asleep but all the noise outside made it extremely hard to. Bandages wrapped around my stomach, a big band-aid was on my right cheek, and my whole body ached with pain. I felt around my face just to find small scratches on my cheeks. Suddenly a figure stood in the doorway. Panic took over my pain and my eyes darted around the room looking for something sharp, anything to protect myself. The figure took a step inside my room. Shadows hid its face so I couldn't tell who or what it was. Glancing around once more for protection, once again, I saw nothing. So I did the only smart thing I could think of. I screamed at the top of my lungs. The figure lurched towards me cupping its hand over my mouth. "Hey," a familiar voice whispered. "Don't worry its me. It's Zack." He pulled out a flashlight and shined it on his face so I could see it was him. "Sorry, most of the lights are out." He smiled at me, that warm smile that made my body feel like it would melt into the bedsheets and spill over onto the floor, walked over to the light switch an flicked on the light. I smiled back ignoring the pain on my cheek an how much the lights stung my eyes. I blinked multiple times and tried to look casual even though I could have named dozens of areas where I was in pain if you asked.
"Hey. What are you doing here?"
"Tasha called me and said you were hurt so I came as fast as I could. All the nurses were busy, even the lady at the front desk was running around helping people. So we split up and went looking for your room. I should probably text her and let her know I found you." Pulling out his phone he quickly texted Tasha and slipped it back in his pocket. I silently thanked her while he wasn't looking and I thanked God for Tasha somehow finding his number. He leaned in closer to me and placed the back of his hand gently on my forehead. Oh dear Lord help me. "So how are you feeling?" I groaned. "Not to good, everything hurts. I bet I look awful." He laughed. "Trust me its not that bad-"
"Okay then I most definitely look horrible." I said cutting him off. "Seriously its not that bad. You don't look half bad in bandages." I raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing its just, I think you look fine. Beautiful even. Bandages or no bandages, your face always has this wonderful glow to it when you're smiling." I giggled and gave him a friendly punch in the arm.
"Stop playing." Part of me wanted to believe him but part of me didn't. No one had ever called me beautiful so I was completely thrown off. No one except my mom of course. He poked my arm and smiled. "I'm not." I poked him back.
"Yes you are."
"No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are."
"Am not."
"Are too."
"AM NOT."
"ARE TOO."
We went on like that for a little bit and at one point he found my weak spot and started poking me everywhere. even though it hurt to laugh I burst into fits of laughter as he poked around my stomach careful not to poke any injured areas. "Oh, I see someone's ticklish."
He started to tickle me like crazy and I couldn't stop laughing. My stomach began throbbing and the pain became unbearable, so I screamed for him to stop. He took his hands away from me immediately. "I'm so sorry! Are you okay?" I nodded. "I-I didn't know it was hurting you I swear! I didn't mean to." I looked up at his panicked face. He leaned over and started checking all my bandages looking for any sign of blood. "Zack, its ok I'm fine," I said trying to calm him down. But he wouldn't stop looking. He even checked my face for any re-opened scratches. When he was finally done he pulled up a chair next to my bed and plopped onto it burying his face in his hands. "I'm so sorry. I don't know what's wrong with me. I hate myself so much right now. I'm so sorry." I reached my hands out and winced as a small stab of pain pricked my stomach. Ignoring it I pulled Zacks hands away from his face. He looked at me with deep sadness in his eyes that made me want to break down and cry. He looked back down and muttered another apology. I squeezed his hands until his glittering eyes were on me. "Zack," I said softly. "It's okay. I'm fine, when you were tickling me I was laughing not crying, which means I was having fun. Trust me, I haven't laughed that hard in awhile. And don't you dare say you hate yourself because your one of the most amazing people I know. I like you. A lot." He stared into my eyes and his lips slowly curled upwards into a bright smile. "Really?" I nodded. His smile widened into a big goofy grin that made me giggle. For a moment we just stayed there staring into each others eyes. He slowly leaned forward and I stayed frozen to my bed. I had always dreamed of the day I would have my first kiss with a really cute guy but now that it was about to happen I was thrown completely off guard. He got closer and my face felt warmer. Uh-oh. His hand reached up and held my cheek as he pulled my face closer to his. Oh God here we go. We were just centimeters away when- "Well I'm slightly offended," Tasha announced completely ruining the moment. Never in my life have I wanted to smack someone so hard. "Here I am worried sick and Zacks over here taking all the love. Did you even save any for me?" His hand left my face and he backed away and stood up. Son of a..."Sorry, she's all yours." Tasha pounced onto my bed and wrapped me in a tight hug. "How you feeling?," she asked patting my head gently like my mom used to when I was sick. "I'm alright." Zack stood in the doorway and turned to leave. "Wait, Zack!," I called after him. "Yeah?"
"Do I get a hug goodbye?" Daija you smarty pants you, I thought to myself. No kiss, fine. Least I could get a hug right? He rushed at me with a big grin on his face, and his strong arms encircled my body. "Yes," he whispered in my ear. "You do." Before pulling a way he gave my body one last gentle squeeze and I waved 'goodbye' as he walked out of the door, disappearing into the frenzied madness outside of my room. Tasha smiled at me. "What?"
"You know what." She nudged my shoulder. "What was that about?" I smiled down at my bed. "What was what about?"
"You know exactly what I mean," she said nudging me again. "What were you and Prince Charming talking about?"
"Nothing."
"Are you sure? Because if you want some advice there's this lingerie store not too far from-"
"Tasha."
"There's nothing to be embarrassed about. What's he into? Romantic or a little freak-"
"TASHA."
She put her hands up. "Okay, just saying." I laughed and she laughed with me and for a moment I forgot all about everything else.
