Audrey’s POV
I got a call from the hospital later that day.
“Hello,” I said.
“Hi Audrey, this is Doctor Janise, I was calling to tell you that you have an appointment at 3:00 tomorrow, will you be able to make it? Or would you like me to reschedule?”
“I’ll be there, can Will come too?”
“Yes of course sweetie.”
Oh thank goodness she said yes.
“Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow then.”
“Goodbye Audrey.”
“WILLLLLLLLLL!” I yelled
He came running out of the room and had a scared look on his face.
“Audrey what’s wrong?”
“Nothing, just wanted to say that you have to drive me to the hospital tomorrow,” I said trying to keep the smile off of my face.
“AUDREY! You scared me to death! I thought you were hurt! Don’t do that again, please.”
“Hahaha okay William.”
“DON’T CALL ME WILLIAM ONLY MY MUM CALLS ME THAT!” he said laughing.
Time skip to tomorrow
“Hello Audrey, Will. How are you today?”
“Pretty good, how about you?” Will said.
“I’m great, thanks for asking. So were going to go to room 12.”
Will and I walked in silence, my hand in his. I squeezed his hand hard, because I was nervous.
“Just go ahead and sit on that chair,” the doctor said. “I’ll have Janise come here in a minute.”
“Thank you,” I said.
Will and I sat in silence, like every other time we were in here.
Then I broke the silence and said, “I’m nervous about what’s going to happen to me, what if they can’t cure me?”
“Don’t think that way love, it’ll all work out, you’ll be fine.”
His accent completes me.
We never let go of hands, until Janise came in.
“Hello Audrey, hello Will, how are you guys today?”
“Good,” we said
“Great. Now Audrey, can you come and sit over here for me?”
I got up and sat on the counter thing.
“Now I just have to do a few simple things to check to see if you’ll be okay.”
“Okay.”
After about an hour of waiting for a response from Janise, Will asked me, “What does it feel like to have cancer, I’ve always wondered.”
“It basically feels like you’re always weak, sort of like when you get the flu, but it’s worse. But sometimes I get so sore it hurts just to sit or lay down. I guess it just depends on the day.”
“Oh,” he says.
Oh. Oh. Just oh. OKAY.
Then Janise came back into the room and said, “Hello again.”
“Hi,” I said.
“We have to do more tests on you to determine the kind of cancer that you have. You can either have Type 1, 2, 3, or 4. The worst is obviously Type 4, but you can also have Small Cell Lung Cancer, or Non Small Cell Lung Cancer.”
“What the heck does that mean?” I asked.
“Well Small Cell is when the cancer is only in one part of your body. That would be cured with chemotherapy. Non Small Cell would be when the cancer has spread to another part of the body. That would be treated by surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination of all of these.”
“Oh.” I said.
Now I’m the one saying the “Oh”.
“We’ll have to do a few more x-rays to determine how bad your cancer is.”
“But they already said that she had Type 4?” Will said.
“No, no, no, she’s not that bad yet, I can tell. She wouldn’t be able to move if she was Type 4.”
“Oh okay,” Will said.
“Yeah, so are you able to come back tomorrow?”
“Um we have to go to the school and get a tour tomorrow, but we can come back at around 5:00 if that’s okay,” I said.
“Okay that’ll be fine. So if you follow me to the front I’ll get that written down.”
“Okay.”
At the front I saw an older lady sitting by herself. I went over to her when we were about to leave and sat with her. She looked like she would have some advice for me.
“Hello,” I said.
“Oh why hello! How are you today?”
“I’m doing okay, and you?”
“I’m absolutely wonderful!”
She sounded so happy, I wish I could be like her.
“Why that look? Oh, never mind, I know exactly why.”
“You do?”
“Yes I do. You’re scared that your cancer won’t be able to get cured, and that you’ll leave him.”
“How did you know all of that?” I asked surprised.
“That’s not all. You’re worried that he will see your wrists, aren’t you?”
I was speechless, how did she know all of this? Was she god or something?
“Um yeah, can you help me with that? I’ve never been able to open up to anyone that well before.”
“Just tell him little bit by little bit. Just say something like I’ve been hiding something for a while, and then tell him whatever you want to tell him. Then he’ll take you into his arms and love you.”
“Oh okay, thank you. But one question, how do you know all of this stuff about me? We’ve never even met before.”
“Oh yes we have Audrey.”
“Then who are you?”
“It’s your Aunt Casey.”
Aunt Casey? I don’t have an Aunt Casey.
“Sweetie, it’s your father’s sister.”
The word father sent a chill up my spine.
“Oh,” I said uncomfortably. “Um I think I have to leave, he’s waiting for me, um bye.”
I ran out the door.
