"You're late." I joked.
"That's my line!"
"Oh hey Avery, I didn't see you there. Although that's a surprise, given the colour on your face. What's the matter? Did you have an allergic reaction to bad shrimp?"
"Lovely to know that you're still an-"
"Amaya, watch yourself." Avery warned.
"I wasn't going to say what you think I was." Amaya rolled her eyes and took a seat in front of me. I guess I'm happy for her and my sister, but I know for sure that I'd rather have her all to myself. She's one of the prettiest girls I've ever seen, if not the prettiest, so I knew from the second I laid eyes on her that I'd have competition, but never in a million years did I expect that competition to be my sister. Summer was so weird; I'm usually the one with a secret girlfriend, but this year it was Avery. She's changed quite a bit since last year, too. I thought she was kidding when she said she wanted her hair cut because for some reason, she's always been so protective of her long, luscious locks. She's also developed this weird obsession for crystals, which none of us but her believe in. Actually, I feel sorry for Amaya since she has to put up with my sister. Does she realise that if she was with me, she wouldn't have to listen to all of that nonsense everyday? Sitting quietly behind the girls, I watched them talking, a spear striking through my heart each and every time one of them laughed or smiled. Quickly, I averted my eyes to my pen and began fiddling with it when Avery spun her head around. "Where's Axel?" she asked.
"Yeah," Amaya joined in. "I haven't seen him today. Wasn't he with you?"
"Where do you think he went?" The pair looked at me with a blank expression, awaiting an answer, despite me being the one who (sarcastically) asked the question. I let out a loud sigh. "Axel's-"
"I heard someone say my name?"
"Right there." I finished.
"How are my wonderful friends on this glorious day?"
"Dude, are you h-" I shook my head at him.
"Hush now, golden boy."
"Will you stop calling me that?"
"Let me think... no."
"I hate you."
"Hey girls. Ooh, Avery, I love your hair!" Axel completely brushed me aside, making my stomach sink.
"Thank you! At least someone noticed." Avery turned to Amaya with a derisive look plastered on her face.
"Oh, come on!" Amaya whined. "Are you going to hold that against me forever?"
"This is my sister we're talking about; of course she's going to." I meddled. Axel took a seat next to me and suddenly, he and Avery were sending each other weird glances. It was almost as if they were talking without using words. For example: Avery raised her eyebrows and her eyes danced between Amaya and I, then Axel shook his head. This year feels exactly like last year; Avery and Axel are keeping something from us. There's this part of me that says it's something to do with Axel because I'm sure Avery tells me almost everything since I found out about her and Amaya. Plus, it makes perfect sense! Avery and Axel have always been pretty close, so I wouldn't be surprised if one of them has a secret that they've told the other. "Alright class..."Ahead of me is a very boring school year, but at least it's my last.
