"Have you heard from Aiden? He should be home by now."
"No, he's your brother, not mine. Have you heard from Axel? He's the one we should be worried about."
"Are you saying that we shouldn't worry about Aiden?"
"Of course we should, it's just that none of us have heard from Axel in almost an entire day."
"Yeah, I guess you're right."
"I'm always right."
"Do you think we'll get a message this year?"
"No, it's not possible. X is dead, remember?"
"I'm scared."
"It's okay." Amaya pulled me into a warm hug, her fingers gently running through my hair. A deafening silence howled through the halls of the empty house. The peace was broken by a loud ringing. On the first note, my stomach dropped. Scrambling to find my phone, tears welled up in my eyes. I picked up the phone, turning it over so the screen was facing up. "Oh, it's just Sadie." I pressed decline.
"Sadie? Who's Sadie?"
"She's my friend... are you jealous?"
"Should I be?"
"Amaya, you're being unreasonable! You can't get mad at me because I have friends that are girls."
"How do you know her?"
"It doesn't matter!"
"Alright, I see."
"Wait, Amaya, where- where are you going?"
"I'm going home. It's getting late anyway."
"So you're just going to storm out?"
"Bye, Avery." Amaya closed the door gently behind her. After a few seconds, I shot up off my bed and ran after her. When I caught up with her, she was just stepping off the doorstep. "Amaya, wait!" I called, my words disappearing into the cold, wet night. She started to walk faster, as did I. Grabbing her arm, I spun her around to face me. Rain poured down on us, stinging as it hit our skin. I kissed her, holding her face in my hands. When I pulled away to look at her face, I remembered just how beautiful she is. Her deep brown eyes stared at me as I began to cry, and words slipped from my mouth before I could even think about stopping them. "Amaya, I would never cheat on you. You're the most beautiful, smart, talented, perfect girl I've ever met. No one could ever replace you. I want to be with you until I'm grey and old, and we can buy a cat and watch sunsets together," I laughed. "You're my person, I'm not letting you go. Not now, not ever. I love you."
"What did you just say?"
"I love you." I repeated with confidence. A grin broke out on her face, then mine. Warm, salty teardrops mixed with the cold, flooding rain. Within seconds, our lips were pressed together again. I want to stay in this moment forever; her smell and her touch make me feel so incredible. Chaotically, butterflies fluttered around in my stomach. When our gaze finally met she said: "I love you too. I'm sorry for getting mad at you. I trust you." I laughed as even more tears rushed down my cheeks. I'd never seen Amaya cry before, but I was so overcome by feelings that I barely noticed, just as I failed to acknowledge the heavy waterfalls pouring down on us as we stood lost in a bubble of space and time. I leant my forehead on her shoulder, the pair of us dripping with both water and emotion, before taking her hand and taking her back inside. We raced up the stairs and got back to my bedroom, soaked through to our skin. The heat from our bodies mixed with passion in the air surrounding us as we lay together. Her fingers glided slowly through my soaked hair that had been turned into a dirty shade of blonde by the rain. "Please don't ever leave me." I whispered.
"I'd have to be mad to do that." Her voice was soothing. I lay with my head resting on her chest and found it more than easy to drift off into a peaceful sleep. If life had a replay button, I know for certain that I would always come back to this very moment, and pause it to live in it forever.
