Miyako didn't wait long until she decided to slip out and leave Juuzou to rest. She looked back at the boy on the couch- her heart tingling slightly, before closing the door behind her.

Soon there wasn't going to be a lot of life roaming the streets, so Miyako had to act fast in her hunt.

She found a man, he wasn't much but he reeked; so he would have to do.
Bringing back a limb of the human, Miyako traced her way back to Kaneki.

Once she found the right floor, she stepped out, chucking the limb towards the ghoul.

"Sorry I took so long." She muttered. When she got no response, Miyako turned towards Kaneki.
She saw he had fallen asleep, and cocked her head to the side. A small smirk spread over her mouth and she breathed out slightly.

Walking over to him, Miyako crouched down so that they were face to face. She shook his shoulders lightly.
"Hey." She whispered, shaking again. "Hey Kaneki. I brought you food."

Kaneki's eyes suddenly shot open, and he jumped back, startled. He hit his head on the wall, and groaned out in pain.

Miyako had jumped back herself in response to Kaneki, and stared at him in silence.
Why was he so startled?

Kaneki looked up at the quiet Miyako, and his eyes went wide for a moment.

"Sorry, you scared me." He joked, looking at her with- what was that? Concern? Miyako nodded, and picked up the human limb.

"I took longer than expected." Kaneki shook his head and swallowed.

"Uh-no, that's okay." He took the limb from Miyako gently, and looked back up at her. "Thank you." He shot her a small smile before biting into the ever growing cold flesh.

He pulled a face, fighting back the rancid taste that swarmed into his mouth, and flicked his eyes back up to Miyako.

"I didn't think flesh could taste this bad." He wiped the blood dripping down his chin, and swallowed.

"I only hunt the bad guys." Miyako confessed, slumping down onto her behind. "There's no point in killing the innocent just for a better tasting limb."

"Innocent." Kaneki repeated softly and he looked down at the flesh in his hands. He gripped onto it tightly, before setting it back to his mouth to continue eating.

Miyako was a little surprised at this new side of Kaneki, and she watched in silence as he ate. She wasn't trying to be creepy; she just wanted to figure him out.

The breeze outside was dropping temperature and Miyako shivered, drawing her jacket closer around herself. She looked out into the night and sighed.
Kaneki had finished eating and was now staring at her; his own hair blowing.

Miyako looked back at him, and blinked. He was looking at her with a peaceful interest, as if he wanted to figure her out as much as she wanted to figure him out.

"You think there are innocent humans?" He asked. Miyako nodded.

"Do you?" This time it was Kaneki who nodded.

"What about ghouls?" Kaneki's face had changed, and was filling up with a lost boy's desperation of hope.

"I think if you look hard enough." Kaneki clenched his jaw and breathed out of his nose. The breeze picked up slightly, and Miyako hugged herself in response.

"Are you cold?" Kaneki asked with concern. "Come here." He motioned for Miyako to sit beside him on the side that would get less wind.

Miyako looked at him for a moment before doing as he said. He wrapped his arms around her and placed his head against her shoulder.
It was a small gesture, but it was something they both needed.

"I'm really tired." Kaneki spoke, a small laugh bubbling from his lips. Miyako huffed, smiling. This side of Kaneki is what she assumed was the Kaneki before he was turned into a ghoul; and she was going to help this side stay.

Moments passed before either of them spoke, however neither Kaneki nor Miyako minded. Miyako was consumed by her thoughts while Kaneki held onto the innocence of the moment.

Kaneki moved his head slightly, and spoke.

"If Hide knew I was hugging a girl.." Kaneki trailed off and smiled at the thought of his best friend. He thought back to the day they were in Anteiku and Hide saw Rize for the first time. Kaneki's smile dropped and his grip on Miyako tightened.

"Who's Hide?" Miyako asked, assuming he was a friend. She was right.

"Oh, just my best friend." Kaneki smiled again. "I miss him." He breathed out.

"Where'd he go?" Miyako's question made Kaneki laugh warmly, and she looked down at his white hair. Hair that reminded her of Juuzou.

"I can't be around him when I am the way I am now, it's not fair to him. He deserves a normal life."

"Is he a human?" Miyako asked, and Kaneki stiffened slightly before nodding.

"But if he knew I was a ghoul now, he would hate me." Miyako's fingers found their way to her lips, as she remembered Juuzou's lips against hers. Irimi's words filled her head.

He wouldn't give it a second thought you kill you.

"If he's your best friend I think he'd understand." She ran her fingers through Kaneki's hair in comfort. "He's not going to hate you for something you didn't ask for."

Kaneki could feel his face begin to heat up as tears pricked his grey eyes. He quickly rubbed at his eyes, but the tears fell anyway. He moved closer to Miyako and held onto her even tighter than before.

"I've just lost so much," Kaneki's voice cracked. "I can't afford to lose him too."

"Kaneki..." Miyako's voice was smooth, and her heart sad.

"I won't lose him." He buried himself into Miyako's shoulder and his sobs grew heavier. "I won't."

For some reason, Miyako could feel herself choke on the lump forming in her throat, as she held Kaneki back; her own tears threatening her eyes.

She wouldn't cry. It wasn't her place to cry. She couldn't be that selfish. So she thought about Juuzou, about his smile, his voice; his touch- while Kaneki's voice filled the ever changing air.

"He's all I have." Kaneki's voice was muffled into her shoulder, and Miyako stared out in front of her.

Juuzou was beginning to be the only thing she had, and that scared her a little. What if Irimi was right?

I don't want you getting hurt.

She wasn't going to get hurt. She would make sure of that.

"He's not going to leave you." Miyako spoke quietly, trying to comfort Kaneki and... herself. "He'll still want to be around you, no matter what."

Kaneki looked up at Miyako, and she looked down at him.

"No matter what?" Miyako placed Kaneki's head back onto her shoulder and nodded.

"No matter what."
