We each held two cups of ice cream as we walked back to where my mom sat. I figured that since it was hot, Willow might like the ice cream to cool down. It was also a nice treat once in a while.
"Do you remember where they are?" Somer asked as she awkwardly took a bit of her ice cream.
"Ugh, I don't know how you can get sherbert and still get chocolate syrup on it. Bleh! But, they're over there."
"Okay, I didn't need your rudeness for my ice cream preference. At least I didn't get pistachio."
"There is nothing wrong with pistachio!"
"Uh hu," Somer said as she shook her head jokingly.
It was nice to have a friend my age. I had River but that was different, they were already in college. We only got to spend a few months together before they left me alone in high school. With Somer, I was able to have a continuing friendship with her and got to see her almost every day.
It was refreshing.
"Somer!" Willow cried as she quickly got up to rush over to us.
"I'm hurt. You didn't do that for me," I pouted.
Willow only stuck her tongue out. My mom laughed but walked the short distance to us. Somer handed Willow the cup, which made Willow rush back underneath the umbrella and Somer followed.
"Pistachio?"
"Not you too, Mom!"
Her face couldn't hold back what she was thinking. She didn't like pistachio either so her scrunched up nose and mouth showed what she was thinking even if she didn't say it.
Mom never has my back, does she?
"C'mon, let's go sit down. Where did you two go?"
"We just talked. Teen stuff," I answered.
Not knowing her boundaries, I wasn't going to out Somer. No matter if she cared or not. It was rude and utterly disgusting to do that to someone.
"Oh, okay then. I hope it went well, nothing too strange."
"Nope. Just Oakley helping me out...oh my gosh, that didn't sound right! I didn't mean that, I just meant that he helped me clear my mind." Somer stopped talking, which only lasted as second before she started rambling again. "That didn't sound any better! I just mean, I had some things on my mind so he just talked about himself and it helped clear up my mind."
"Somer, no one cared that it sounded wrong," I laughed.
Her brown eyes blinked at me but looked away quickly. She was embarrassed so I wasn't going to press further. It was a little funny at how she thought we automatically thought something bad about it.
"Don't be mean, I'm sure she didn't mean to say it like that. I'm glad y'all didn't do more than talk. I don't need grandkids this early."
"Mom!" I gasped and gave her a wide eye look. Why did she automatically assume that the first...no, that sounds about right. The first girl after my ex-boyfriend being introduced to my family would seem suspicious. My mom knew that any gender had equal opportunities to have my affection.
Why couldn't you have just not heard all of that Mom? Just forget that I can even have children, I don't want any!
"I'm sorry."
