Ella has my face between her hands and her eyes are locked with mine. She is standing too close to me which makes me take a step back. "Ella, please, you're not sober, you don't know what you're doing." I step away from her and pull a chair from the nearby desk, sitting on it. "I am sober, Josh, I don't know what you're talking about."For a moment I almost believe her but she clearly smells like alcohol and it's unusual for her to swear like she did. You don't know if it's usual or unusual because you haven't been that much around her. "Ugh Jack not now, please shut up." Ella clearly hears what I said and raises an eyebrow at me. "Let me just get this straight, you are accusing me of being drunk when you clearly are so high that you talk to imaginary friends." Hey! I'm not an imaginary friend, I'm his brain, bitch! Can you not call her a bitch? Can you not continue this discussion since she already thinks you are a weirdo? Good idea. "It's not an imaginary friend, I have inner discussions with my brain and randomly named him Jack after Jack Dawson from the Titanic. Laugh away, I may be a bit mental." I let out a low laugh even though I don't find this situation funny. "And for the record, I'm not high, I took two drags out of that joint, what you saw were the facts. Plus, I did come after you so I cannot be in two places at the same time."
Her expression seems to soften but there's still a glimpse of disappointment in her eyes. I wonder how she would react if she knew my past and maybe that's just one more reason to add to the endless list I already have of motives to stay away from her. "So, for the record, I'm not drunk, I had one shot right before heading upstairs to try and delete that image from my mind. I just never thought of you as that kind of guy." She looks away from me for a second causing me to get up and step closer to her again. "I went to the tree house on that day." Ella immediately looks back at me again and I can see the surprised look on her face. "I hadn't been there since the last time but after our conversation my feet kinda just dragged me there." I nervously run my fingers through my hair. "Are you sure your feet dragged you there or was it Jack?" Yas girl, love the sass. I roll my eyes and she laughs in amusement.
The music coming from downstairs is loud enough for us to clearly hear it. A voice can be heard through the speakers, one I recognize as Caroline's and she lets everyone know that since there was no homecoming prom, she was giving everyone the chance to have a slow dance. Girl Crush by Little Big Town starts playing but the cover version done by Harry Styles which is personally better in my opinion.
I look over to Ella and remember that we heard this song together many years ago. I hold out my hand for her which she hesitantly takes and I pull her closer and place my other hand at the bottom of her back. We start slowly dancing to the song like time was never in our way. At this moment, we were just the two kids that met 6 years ago and fell in love with each other without knowing what that meant or the consequences that came from it. I spin her around which makes her laugh and then pull her close again.
Ella leans her forehead against mine and keeps a tight hold on my hand. We keep moving as we stare into each others eyes. Joshy I'm about to cry here, please make a move on this beautiful girl who is very clearly still in love with you. Not the time, Jack. The song finishes and another upbeat tune starts playing but we keep moving the same way. "Probably not the best song to slow dance to." Ella whispers lowly and I cannot help but laugh at her words. "You're right, definitely not."
We pull apart and stare awkwardly at each other, unclear of what to do about what had just happened. Ella ends up telling me all about her years in this school and all she has accomplished and I just listen to her talking, extremely proud of what she has been able to do. I have always known that she was a very smart girl but I'm happy that other people see that in her as well. I don't know for how long we have been in this room but I get a text from Harry asking if I left and if everything is okay. I give him a short reply that I ran into someone that knows my family and we're just hanging for a bit and that I will meet them outside soon.
