Avengers Tower, New York City

It's late. Dark. Of course, New York is the city that never sleeps, so Tony Stark should feel right at home. Yes, he is at home, up at this late hour, toiling away in his lab, but he doesn't feel at home. No, not here, not in any of his houses, not when Pepper's around (which she never is nowadays) not even when his daughter's around. He never feels at home because he knows he's never safe. No matter how secure the tower he locks himself in is. The night sky that looms over him an irrepressible reminder of the great unknown. Each star a glistening question mark.

He stands alone in his lab, staring at all his equations and designs on the holograms around him, "What did we miss?"

"I'll continue to run variations on the interface-" the AI is cut off by the sound of heels clicking down the corridor, "Miss Stark is approaching.  I believe it wise of you to inform her-"

"Shush, J." Tony dismisses, as the door opens.

"Dad! There you are!" Aria walks in, wearing a short black dress, with her hair curled, pushing in a pair of, likely extremely expensive, silver earrings, "What are you doing locked up in here? You need to get ready for the party."

He walks over and plants a kiss on her forehead, "Unlike you, it doesn't take me four hours to get ready." She rolls her eyes, so he says, "I'm coming, I'm coming, don't worry."

He slings an arm over her shoulder and starts to leave with her, "I'll notify you if there are any developments." J.A.R.V.I.S says.

"Thanks, buddy."

"Developments to what?" she asks, innocently.

"Doesn't matter." he lies, quickly shifting the subject, "You look gorgeous, sweetheart."
