Chapter twelve

LYNNETTE'S POV
I felt numb.
Broken.
Betrayed.
Hurt.
I sat in class staring at the board but not seeing what was written on it.
Crystal was whining inside my head, hurting from our mate's betrayal.

I also couldn't hear a word of what Mr. Martins was saying. Neither could I hear a word of what Leila was bubbling on about.

Leila tapped my arm and my thoughts were broken. "Hey, what's wrong?" She frowned. I gave her a tight smile. "Nothing's wrong". Her frown deepened. "Lyn" she said softly.

My thoughts were raging. Of course nothing was okay. First I get chased by some seriously crazed rouges and then I see my mate cheat on me.
I give a deep sigh and force out a smile which is not so tight this time.

"I'm fine" my voice comes out more like a whisper and this makes my eyes fill up with tears. "Oh sweetie" Leila whispers and pulls me into a side hug.

"I...it... it's Aaron" I whispered as my heart clenched in pain. The tears started leaking from my eyes as I clutched Leila tightly.
Her eyes darkened. "What about him?"she hissed.

"I saw him....I saw him kissing another girl" I sobbed. The pain was unbearable. Leila's eyes darkened further and I could feel the anger rolling off her in waves. "HE DID WHAT?" she exclaimed harshly.

I sobbed some more as Leila hugged me tighter and fumed.
"I swear I will murder that asshole" she hissed again.
I sniffed and wiped away my tears and snot.
" I don't want a mate anymore. I haven't even marked and mated him and look at how much it hurts"I whispered.

Leila looked at me sympathetically.
"I'm sorry darling but lycans can't reject their mates. Once you have found the one, you can't reject him or her".

" Well then I don't want to see him again or talk to him".
Leila smiled at me. " I'm here for you".
" I know" I said and managed a weak smile. Just then,the bell rung for recess.

Leila took my hand and dragged me to the cafeteria despite my protests about not being in the mood. When we entered,his scent hit me at once,the pain in my heart tripled and Crystal whined loudly in my head.

His body tensed a bit before turning to face me. A dazzling smile graced his face and made me go weak in the knees.'No Lyn. You're stronger than this' I whispered to myself and took ahold of whatever confidence I had left in me.

I gave him a blank stare which turned his smile into a look of confusion. Then I grabbed my food and followed Leila to our special spot. Crystal kept whining in my head. She couldn't come to terms with the betrayal and was still yearning for her mate. I shushed her up and tried to focus on eating even when I felt his keen gaze travel my body.

I shivered slightly. Damned mate bond!!
Just as I was about to bite into my apple,the principal barged into the cafeteria and called for me. I felt confused.

"We have received a call from the hospital. It's your mother" he said hastily.
There was a lump building up in my throat and a dull headache began to make itself known.

My eyes snapped to Leila who immediately left everything and came to me.
" It's mom. I need to get to the hospital now" I choked.
She gave me a small smile " I will go with you".
I smiled back. Leila was a wonderful friend.

We wasted no time in getting out of the cafeteria and I could feel Aaron's eyes on me the whole time.
When we got out of school, Leila looked around and made sure there was no one around. Then she muttered some words which I guessed was a teleportation spell because we landed right in front of the hospital.

We raced inside and asked quickly for my mother's room. The nurse looked at me suspiciously before telling me the room number. And I know it's probably because of my greyish-purple eyes. And the fact that my mom and I don't have a single resemblance.

I opened the door once I got in and invited Leila in too.
"Mom" I choked when I saw her hooked to so much machines.
Her beautiful eyes fluttered open. Those eyes that have looked at me with love since I was a child.

"Nettie" one of her nicknames for me slipped out of her lips which looked cracked up and parched.
The tears threatened to spill.
"Nettie,I don't have long..."she started and I shushed her up.
" No mom. Nothing's going to happen to you. You will get better from whatever this is then we will go home and live together again"

She smiled sadly." I'm dying Nettie. It's my time"
No,it couldn't be. She was too young to die. She couldn't leave me alone like this.
"No mom... please" I sobbed.
"Don't cry darling. I just want to tell you something very important before I die"
" What is it mom?"I sniffed, my face a horrid mixture of tears and snot.

"You are a very special person. You are a werewolf but way stronger and more powerful"
" I know Mom. You told me on my birthday, remember?"
She smiled again. " I told you Nettie but there was one thing I left out".

" What?"I asked in confusion.
She took a deep breath and said" When I found you that day, you were in your shifted form and you were only a year old".
I was stunned. Shifting at an early age was unheard of.
I glanced at Leila who was as confused as I was.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier mom."
"I'm sorry darling. I just realized a few days ago when I was thinking about Terry and Dana,my two werewolf friends who vanished during the war.
They shifted at a certain age. But you shifted when you were just a little pup."

" So how come I never realized I had already shifted"
" I think you forgot about how to shift because your mom raised you as a human. There are very rare cases in which werewolves shift at a very young age and it's normally due to a traumatic experience. Maybe when your birth parents died. And because you grew up as a human, forgetting about your experience, your wolf became dormant till the normal age for shifting" Leila explained,her eyebrows knitted together in thought.

"I guess so" mom rasped and started coughing.
"Mom! Mom!!" I panicked.
The heart monitor started to beep slower and slower.
"I love you Nettie. Always" she whispered as her eyes closed forever.
