Jackie's pov

Another day at school. I really don't understand why I go anymore, considering I only get bullied for beimg a nerd, but the bad part is that my best friend has to suffer too.

Elia doesn't really mind, she says that if I'm being bullied, she won't let me suffer alone. Doesn't make sense, I know, but she still believes that one day, someone will speak up against the Angels and protect us.

She's so naive, but she's Elia; she still believes in anything and her dreams are so unrealistic. But she acts this way because of her horrible past.

When Elia was younger, around six years old, her dad left her, leaving her in the hands of a horrible man who would rape her every night. Her mom, who had been away on a business trip for several months, came back to see the man on top of her daughter. She grabbed the closest object, which happened to be a machete, and swung it at the man's head. She injured the man pretty badly, then got Elia out of the house and into her grandmother's house. Elia was reunited with her brothers, but she still has nightmares of that man.

Up until sixth grade, Elia had been sort of emo. She shut everyone out, when she was in public or in school, she would flinch anytime a guy got near her. That is, until she met me. I had gone through something similar, but I wasn't raped.

When my dad left, he left me with his wife, my stepmom. She would abuse me and would not let my real mom get me on the weekends. I would do all the chores except cook because I was so young, but Step Momma Jocie wouldn't make me food. I had to eat from cans, and most of the cans were spoiled, which would explain why I am so skinny and with several health conditions. I finally had enough of her abuses, so when she was hitting me and yelling at me, I had the phone on in the living room with the police on the line. They came just as my stepmom was attemting to drown me in the baghthtub, and they arrrested her on the spot. They called my real mom, and we were reunited once again, my brothers and sisters welcoming me with open arms.

They sent me to school, but it wasn't any better. I would get laughed at for not knowing anything about life or a cellphone. I met Elia during P.E. one day, and after getting the courage to talk to me, we soon realized we were the same. Soon after, we were inseperable. When people bullied me, she would try to protect me, and her innocent face often worked to get the bullies in trouble. She became my best friend, and she knows as much about me as I know about her.

Now as I walked past the gates to Sidney High, I saw her waiting for me under the giant oak tree. We call it Big Ben, because it's big and it reminds of an old man whose name was Ben. As I walked towards her, a high heeled foot stuck out and tripped me, making my books fall everywhere. As usual, everyone but Elia laughed as she helped me pick up my things. I heard a familiar tinkly laugh behind me.

"Oh, look who it is. It's Jackel and Olive, how cute. After all these years, you're still as horrifying as the first day I knew you two would only drag me down. But now, look at you. You're kneeling on the cold hard ground like the stupid slaves you are!" We didn't say a word, just kept on picking up my stuff as she laughed at her useless insults.

Stupid Audra Smith. Stupid Angels. Audra was the leader of the group. Although she was the smallest and skinniest one of them all, she was the most powerful. Her dad was the richest guy in town, in fact, he owned the school. Jasmine, Ariel, and Kayla were only half as rich as her, but more beautiful. They weren't as mean, but because of her power and her money, they did whatever she said.

Elia and I walked away from their laughter and walked to class. Just as we were getting there, the crowd parted for the most popular, and hottest, group of boys in our school : 5SOS. I had a huge crush on Micheal Clifford, the leader of their group. Elia loved Luke, but then again, everyone did. As leader of the group, Audra thought Micheal and her belong together because she was the most popular girl in school, and he was the most popular boy.

I knew I would never have a chance against her, but he was the only thing that kept me from getting out of this school. Elia would always repeat the same words: "Nothing is impossible. They might be the ones to help us one day, they're so nice. I might just happen." I didn't completely believe her words, but they have been known to be the only ones who could get Audra to stop bullying anyone, but only for a short time.

As they walked by, they waved at several girls, and it might just be me, but I couldn't help but think that Micheal had just waved at me. Gosh, I'm so screwed. It's hopeless, I don't stand a chance.
