—Part 5.2—

Double Scheme

"Choose yourself, Hua. They can't hurt you anymore."

—Hua—

"Zhong Meihua."

The girl froze, the crowd of Abnegation turning to face her as she stood up from her seat, her mother grabbing her hand squeezing it painfully tight. She didn't bother to look back at her as she yanked her arm out of her grip, a scoff coming out of her mother's lips. Hua didn't care anymore.

She knew her mother was furious after what had just happened. Chenle moved to Erudite, and she was silently demanding an explanation from the girl, but she would never give her that. She would never throw him under the bus, and she wouldn't have to soon, but only the twins knew that secret.

She felt her mothers glare burn behind her as she made her way down the steps, the sound of her shoes hitting concrete echoing around her.

In truth, she was terrified, and every step closer to the podium increased her heart rate. Her mind was running as she thought of the decision she was about to make, the decision that would be deemed as selfish in the eyes of her parents and all of Abnegation.

Looking for guidance, she turned towards Erudite, her eyes meeting his, a small smile adorning his lips, wordlessly encouraging her to choose what was right for her.

It was time to close this chapter, and I need to find myself to grow. If Chenle can do it, I can too.

Reaching the bottom, the girl didn't even hesitate as she grabbed the blade, digging it into the palm of her hand, the sting causing her to wince as she watched the cut ooze crimson. Her blood threatened to fall as she stared at the bowls in front of her. They taunted her silently as if they were telling her just to pick already.

But she couldn't.

What if I'm not good enough? What if mother was right, what if I am worthless?

Her thoughts filled with doubts as she watched the plasma pool in her palm, a signal that she had to make her choice now or she would forever regret it. The silence of the room wasn't helping her either.

Choose yourself, Hua. They can't hurt you anymore.

Hua stretched her arm out, tilting her palm ever so slightly, watching as a drop fell into the burning coals, the sizzling of her blood on the hot embers ringing around them.

"Dauntless!"

The room erupted into a frenzy of cheers from her new faction, the reaction filling her with adrenalin and relief. The emotions came so strong, hitting her like a wave that threatened to spill over because she was finally free.

The ravenette gave one last glance at her parents, a cocky smirk adorning her features as she noticed her mother's furious look and her father's colourless face of disbelief.

I hope you both live your lives in shame for treating Chenle and I like trash.

The girl finally switched her attention back to her new faction, a celebratory scream bubbling out as she ran into the sea of leather.

I'm finally alive.
