IT ALL BROKE into chaos. The soldiers pulled out their rifles, and the volcra attacks were relentless. Cries of pain and fear were heard, and Valarie felt like she couldn't breathe.

The First Army started to release fire as an attempt to slow the attack down. Everything around the Heartrender was a blur, but Valarie kept searching for a glimpse of her friends.

But at the sound of a piercing scream, Valarie regained her focus, and her heart nearly stopped when she realized who it was.

Claudia.

A volcra had pierced its sharp talons through the Inferni's shoulder, nearly her chest. But before Valarie could react, the world went white.

NOT LONG AFTER the attack, the skiff was brought back to East Ravka, or more specifically, Kribirsk.

Once the skiff practically crashed into the dock, many people were getting on and off the skiff, and they were moving very fast.

Valarie's main priority was to find Claudia. When she had reached the Inferni, Aaron was already there.

"Is she alright? Do you think she'll be okay? Do —"

"Val, relax. We're nearly out of cots, so I'll bring her myself to a Healer. I want you to get the cartographer to the General's tent."

"No! I'm going with you!" Valarie argued, staring at the unconscious Claudia.

"She'll be okay, just go now!"

"But-"

"General's orders Val, go, go, go!" he said quickly. Reluctantly, the Heartrender found where the cartographer was laying (and instantly realized it was Alina Starkov) and saw Zoya crouching by her body, examining the girl.

Once the Squaller stood up, Valarie pulled her aside.

"Get her to the General's tent," she said quietly.

"Already on it," Zoya replied.

The Heartrender sent her a nod and set off to find Claudia, regardless of the General's orders.

"Saints," Valarie murmured after seeing her friend's body. A Healer named Winnie Kozlov was standing right over Claudia, tending to her wound, but the dried spots of blood remained. "Is she going to be okay?"
