The thing about Persephone
is that she liked the pomegranate because
it tasted like freedom in her throatHades saw her, really saw her
and Persephone liked the feel of
his fire on her skinMaybe Demeter's gardens could
never compare to the burning or the
juice dripping down her chinMaybe the flowers bloomed
a thorny cage around the daughter
and she could no longer feel warmthMaybe the sweetness of the mother's
love was sticky and turned
sour on Persephone's tongueMaybe the whole point of the
pomegranates is that they were
bitter, and tasted like freedomMaybe the tale of Persephone is not about
Persephone and Hades
Maybe the tale of Persephone is about
Persephone and Demeter
