Korrine's POV
Patience is not a skill I've been able to have lately. Waiting even a few seconds later than I feel like I should will aggravate me to the worse degree. So going through three hours of tests and now having to wait for the doctor to tell me whether or not I'm clear to give Trey my kidney has put me in a bad mood. But if Dr. Mason clears me, it'll bring me a piece of I haven't felt in a cool minute. I'll be even happier when Trey wakes up after a healthy kidney is placed in his body, helping him function normally again. Nothing will beat that except maybe the look on his family's face when they're told good news. That is if there will be some good news to tell.
"Surprise, surprise!" Dr. Mason shouts as bursts into the room. The door opening so suddenly, banging against the wall, and her loud voice makes me tense up and black out for a good two to three seconds before I can focus on what's going on again. Even after I'm aware, my heartbeat is still beating faster than normal. "Are you okay, honey?" she asks, placing her hand on my shoulder.
"Of course I am," I say, forcing a smile. "Any good news?"
She studies me for a moment before returning the smile and taking a seat in the swivel chair. "Yes, indeed. Your test results confirm that you're just as healthy now as you were before the whole incident."
"Thank God!" my momma shouts, clasping her hands together.
"This means I can donate my kidney, right?" I ask.
"I also checked the antibody cross-match test, and it came out negative, which means we can go ahead and do the surgery, but I must go over the procedure as well as the risks with you. This isn't just the removal of your appendix or tonsils," she explains. "The transplant surgery can last three to for hours; however, we'll give you a normal anesthetic to put you to sleep. We'll make an incision in your lower stomach area and disconnect your kidney from the artery and vein it's connected to in your pelvis area."
"Will she be in too much pain after?" my momma asks.
"Not exactly. There will be slight swelling from the stitches, minor pains, and a few weeks of tests and evaluations to make sure everything went well, but not too much pain."
"What about life after?"
"Well, people her age can become unbalanced. If they're involved in any type of sports or do a lot of running, this can have a chance of interfering with that for a long period of time, but that's not all or half the amount of cases. Many people walk away from this procedure completely fine after they have healed," Dr. Mason explains.
That's something that I didn't know could happen. Cheering means so much to me, so the fact that losing one of my kidneys can keep me from pursuing it is scary, but there's no way I'm backing out now. Dr. Mason said that it only effects a small amount of people in that way, and hopefully I won't be a part of them. I don't even want to think about the chances of that happening to me, so I'm just going to pray on it.
"I can schedule the surgery for Tuesday morning, and I'll inform Treyvon's parents of your decision. You both will be operated on at the same time and your rooms will be side by side so that when one team removes your kidney, we can immediately place it inside of him."
Tuesday is four days away, which is longer than I hoped, but hopefully these days fly by. "Sounds good. Thank you for everything. I guess I'll see you early Sunday morning," I say, jumping off the bed.
"Korrine, can I speak with you privately?" Dr. Mason asks, taking me off guard. What else could she want to talk to me about if she's already explained the procedure and everything else?
"I'll go fill out all the paperwork," my momma says, grabbing our stuff and walking out of the room.
Being left alone with Dr. Mason to talk is making me more nervous than I was when I was waiting for these results. If she's trying to talk me out of helping Trey just like my momma was, then I'm not going to have it. This is my decision, and I'll tell her just like that because she has to go through with it regardless. "What is it, Dr. Mason?"
