Sam at first didn't like hunting with his family he wanted to become a lawyer and have a normal live until Azazel killed his girlfriend Jessica when he left to go back to hunting with Dean. While hunting the 7 sins he met a demon called Ruby and became friends with Sam but Dean didn't trust her. When Sam found out he was Lucifers vessel , Ruby said she would" help " Sam get stronger for Lucifer. Sam and Dean tried so hard to stop Lucifer from becoming free from his cage but Ruby used Sam, He thought he was stopping Lucifer but he was really setting him free. Sam and Dean researched loads of ways to kill lucifer but none of them work but one , if they got the 4 horse men's rings (which they did) they would open the cage .To get lucifer in the cage Sam said yes to lucifer because he felt bad.When Sam died Dean had a normal life for a year until one day Sam came to deans house and told him he's been alive for a year .
They started hunting again. Cass found out that Sam has no soul and it's still in hell . Dean ask Death (one of the horse men ) for help and Death got Sams soul and put a wall to stop all the memories from hell killing him.
The wall broke and he started seeing lucifer but he was real so he learned to fight it. I think Sam is a strong character and is brave to say yes but it very trusting and he trusts the wrong people.
