"I thought he wasn't supposed to come until tomorrow!" I whispered angrily.
"Well it's not my fault his flight got changed. There's supposed to be really shitty weather for the next week, so I apologize for wanting to give him at least the amount of time he was told he'd have in America!" Danny retorted, his voice dripping with venomous sarcasm.
"Oh shut up Danny. Just let him know that I'm off-limits and I'll be fine." I scowled, glancing at Luke as he leaned back in his chair and put his feet on the one in front of him.
"And what makes you think he'll even like you?" Danny raised an eyebrow.
"Because. A guy like him will go after every girl in this school!" I turned my glare back on Danny.
"Right," he rolled his eyes as Ms. Tessle had everyone stand. Luke remained in his seat. "He's a good kid Haylee. You'd know that if you talked to him."
"I'm sure he's lying," I said, mainly to myself.
"Just give him a chance, will you? God, stop being so judgmental about a kid you don't know," Danny hissed.
I didn't respond, just looked at Ms. Tessle. My mind was shooting in a thousand different directions at the moment, so I tried to focus it on the class.
About ten minutes later, the period bell rang. I snatched my things from the floor and stalked out, fuming. I really wasn't looking forward to going home today.
••••••••••
My car was about a million degrees on the inside as I got into the drivers seat. The leather seats felt like they'd burn my skin, but at this point I could be in the fires of hell itself and not feel a thing. My rage was hotter than anything else.
I sat there, waiting for the AC to kick in, as well as waiting for my brother to get here so I could drive him and Luke home. God dammit, why did he have to come today?!
The door opened a few minutes later and a laughing Danny plopped into the passengers seat. Luke sat in the back, a bit of a struggle considering his long legs. But I'd rather sit next to Danny any day.
"Hi Haylee," Danny said, his smile turning to a slight scowl. "I don't think you've formerly met Luke yet."
"I can meet him when we get home," I said irritably as I pulled out of the parking spot.
"You don't have to be rude about it, Hay. He's a guest, and you know what mom says about guests," he said in a snarky voice.
"Just shut up." I growled at him and turned the radio on. It's was always on the same channel, the only one in sunny Cleveland that played the kind of music I liked. The song that was currently playing, American Idiot by Green Day, blasted suddenly through the speakers. I saw Danny jump slightly and smirked, then glanced at Luke in the rear view mirror.
He was looking at me.
I quickly looked back at the road, all traces of my smirk wiped clean of my face. I drove in silence, the music doing nothing to ease the insane amount of tension in the car.
After about five minutes, we arrived at our house. As soon as the car was parked, I yanked the keys from the ignition and stormed inside before Danny or Luke had a chance to stop me.
Running up to my room, I shut the door, locking it, and collapsed on the bed in anger. I was the only one of us kids with a lock on their door since I was also the only girl and mom and dad decided to give me some privacy.
"Haylee, come out and say hi to Luke!" I heard Danny yell from downstairs as he came inside.
Instead of replying, I plugged my phone into the large speakers against the wall and blasted the first playlist I found. I say down at my desk and pulled out my computer.
Logging onto twitter, I searched Luke's account. And what I found was very interesting.
He was in a band. It's some "punk" band, which isn't punk at all. They're more along the lines of "pop punk", if that. I rolled my eyes and scrolled through his tweets. They were mundane thing mostly, sprinkled with more interesting announcements. After almost twenty minutes, I logged off, shut my computer, and went back to laying on my bed with a journal and pen.
I scribbled down a few lyrics to the song I was working on before grabbing my guitar to figure out some chords. I jotted down the notes and continued like that, moving between lyric and notes.
A little while later, there was a knock on my door. I ignored it, figuring it was just Danny come to tease me. But after another moment there was a voice I'd never heard. It was deep and accented, smooth and beautiful. Luke's voice.
"Um, Haylee?" he called over the music. I ran over to the speaker to pause it, then stood there for a second, unable to catch my breath.
"Haylee? Can you open the door?" he said after a pause of silence. I walked over and put my hand on the door handle, then stopped myself.
"What do you want?" I asked quietly through the barrier.
"I just wanted to introduce myself. You know, just say hi," Luke replied.
"Well I know who you are. So bye," I said coldly. I really wasn't in the mood to talk.
"Please?" He almost sounded hurt.
I sighed, then yanked open the door, expecting to see a kind-looking boy there. I was wrong.
Luke leaned against the door frame, smirking down at me. He didn't look hurt in the slightest, which made me scoff. "What?" I snapped.
"Don't be like that, cutie," he said, pouting dramatically.
"Go away, prick," I closed the door again. But he stopped it with a large hand, pushing it back open easily.
"Aw, come on Haylee. I'm just trying to say hi." He grabbed me around the waist and pulled me against him. As he stood up straight, I tried to push away, but he held tight. "You're mine," he growled in my ear.
"Let go of me!" I pushed hard against his chest. It was hard and lean under my hands, but I really had to focus right now.
He released me and smirked again, before backing up and allowing me to slam my door in his face. I turned around and put my back to the wall, sliding down to the floor.
What just happened?
