Annie drove me to school every morning and I was glad for it. I could sleep for twenty more minutes while we made our way there.
I didn't sleep very well at night. Yeah, the window was beautiful and the view was breathtaking.
But at night.
Owls and other creatures could be heard, trees made scary noises and the moonlight created weird shadows in my bedroom that they just so happened to look like monsters.
It was the one thing I didn't get used to.
Annie woke me up when we arrived, students chatting and playing before getting inside. I got out of the car and waved at Annie, who waved back at me with a smile on her face.
My braided hair was already a little messy so I smoothed down the little baby hairs and took a deep breath before taking the first step.
Girls were in groups and they talked vigorously, boys annoying them as they played around. I didn't have anybody to talk to. I could try and make some friends today. I was pretty sure I could find something in common with these people.
Just when I was about to surrender and get inside early, a blonde girl called my name. "Hey! Coco, right?"
I nodded. She gave me a little smile and waved for me to approach the group of girls that surrounded her. They went to my class but I hadn't had the chance to talk to them. Yesterday they seemed like a very closed group.
"Hi." I smiled, securing my backpack straps.
"You come from the city, right?" One of the girls asked. I nodded.
"Are you rich?" Another one asked.
"Uhm- I don't know."
"I bet you are. That's designer's." Some other girl pointed out, touching my backpack.
"You dress a little bit like a grandma, though." A girl snickered and all the girls laughed.
"Salma!"
"What? It's true. Nothing than a little visit to the mall can't change, though."
"Do you have a boyfriend?" The blonde one who first talked to me asked all of a sudden. A smug smile in her lips.
Boyfriend? I was nine. I didn't think of boys that way.
"I-"
"How are boys in the city?" She pressured.
I thought for a second before answering the first thing that came to mind. "They look older."
The few references I had were the boys in my class and that boy Justin, who I knew was my age but was shorter than me.
"Oh my god, they do?"
"I told you the city is just better!"
"This neighborhood is so boring and simple! Guys are disgusting."
Just then, a dark skinned boy approached us and smirked at me. "Sup, girl."
He did not just say that.
I swallowed nervously.
The blonde girl rolled her eyes. "Let her be, Kaden." Then she looked at me. "He likes you."
"I- uhm..."
"Wanna hang out sometime? Just you and me." The boy, whose name was Kaden asked as he wrapped an arm around my shoulders.
I was getting so overwhelmed I didn't even know what to say. "No-not really, no."
Everyone gasped and broke out laughing. Especially the boys, who laughed hard.
