JUSTIN'S POV

The past few months had been quieter than usual. And I should love it. I mean, that was what I had always wanted.

Peace.

My mind was always full of ideas, not always good ones, sometimes very self destructive ones. That was why, perhaps right now was not the best time to be alone.

I needed to talk to Colette. But things had been weird lately. I knew it was because I had fucked up, but really, it wasn't my intention to hurt her. I had been hurting for a while, too. I really thought I had made a fool of my self, her recent words just confirming it.

"It was just a stupid crush."

Fuck it, I needed to see her.

I went down to the garage and grabbed my bike, really noticing now how much I had actually grown. It was so small my knees hurt. Maybe I could just borrow my brothers'.

They'd actually kill me.

I glanced at the back of the garage and saw a blue drape covering some stuff. I had never been that curious to actually lift it up, but I guess after fifteen years, now was a good moment.

It was my dad's old bike. Memories of him leaving with it to 'find a job' when I was just four hit me. Sometimes he would forget it somewhere and my brother Brandon would go pick it up. I remembered it as if it was yesterday. He didn't take the car since he knew he would be drinking and the motherfucker was actually scared to die. As if all that drinking wouldn't kill him. As if he just wanted to live years and years of his life just to fuck all of us up just a little bit more everyday.

I didn't realize I was biting my lips that hard until I tasted a little bit of blood in them.

Fuck it.

I grabbed that old bike and hopped on it, pedaling towards Colette's house. She hated that I called it her house, she said it wasn't her home. It was her uncle's. I knew how much she wanted to move out. More now that his uncle had been acting so weird and 'fatherly' since Annie had moved in again.

As soon as she got some money, she would move out. Because college wasn't in the picture. She wanted to start working next year after her sixteenth birthday. She still didn't know what to do but I have a pretty good feeling that my sister Cara would know what to do to help.

The red door greeted me after two long months. I really enjoyed going to France, I was practically bilingual by now, but sometimes I really missed being here. I didn't have to pretend to be someone I wasn't, I could just stay at home and relax or just talk to Colette whenever I wanted. She got me, and not many people did. She didn't humor me like most people did, she just said things like they were.

I let my bike at the fence and walked towards the door, ringing the bell. Annie opened it just five seconds later, as if she had been waiting for me.

"Hey, Justin!" She smiled. "How are you? How was your summer?"

"Hi." I smiled back. "It's been great." I knew how she enjoyed talking sometimes, so I cut to the chase. I didn't even asked back. "Uhm- is Colette home?"

"She didn't tell you?" She frowned, as if it was hard to understand. "She went with that dark haired boy..." Annie drove her hand to her mouth. "What was his name..."

"Jake?"

She snapped her fingers. "That one!"

"Do you know where they went?" I asked getting impatient. I really didn't want to see that guy, but I didn't want to leave them alone.

"I'm sorry, honey." She smiled apologetically. I was a firm believer that this girl had aged 20 years over the last few months. She was just 27 and she acted like a 47 year old. I wasn't judging, I just thought she didn't act like that before.

I hopped back on my bike and made my way to the creek. Even though I didn't like her being there again after what happened, I knew it would be the first place she thought about going.

And just when I was approaching the place, I confirmed my suppositions.

"Yeah, I fell from this rock."

"And you say he saved you? You're fucking with me." That fucker.

"I'm not!" Colette exclaimed. "He really did. I would be dead if he hadn't been there to catch me."

I saw them looking down at the creek. There wasn't enough water now to even brush your knees, so I guessed it could be unbelievable to think she was once about to drown.

I cleared my throat so they noticed I was there.

"Hey!" Colette smiled, seeming happy to see me.

"Hey." Jake nodded once, this one not so happy.

"I went to your uncle's." I said to Colette.

"Oh, yeah. I forgot to tell you I was going to hang out with Jake. I was planning on showing him the van." She said slowly, as if afraid of my reaction.

She knew better than to ask me that, of course I didn't want him to see it. It was ours, even if it originally was just mine, she had helped remodeling it, she had made it like a home. And she wanted to share it with the potato head.

I licked my lips, not really knowing what to say.

"But we don't have much time for that." She quickly shook her head and glanced at Jake apologetically. "We were going to watch a movie, weren't we?"

"Where are you guys going?" I asked, hoping I could go, too. Just to annoy him.

"My house." Jake said. "I have a 86 inch TV in the basement."

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention he was loaded and he was a bitch about it. My sugar blood levels were a little bit low and I wasn't in the mood for this.

I nodded, looking around. "I was going to FaceTime some people from France either way."

"Emma?"

I had told Colette, only because she asked about it, the whole story about my first time. She asked who was the girl, who was Emma. She asked if she was older than me, which she was, she was 17. She asked if I had liked it, which I did, I just didn't think it was that special. It was quick, and a little bit awkward but it felt good.

She thought now that Emma and I were kind of dating and to be honest, I wasn't denying it. I didn't want to make her believe things that were not true, but after everything she told me I didn't want her to think I didn't care about the girls I hooked up with. I wasn't a player, I just wasn't in love with the girl. I didn't think that made me one.

So yeah, maybe I was making her think that Emma and I were together.

"Yeah, maybe." I shrugged. She nodded slowly, pressing her lips together. "I better get going." I pointed behind my back with my thumb before I turned around.

"Justin!"

I stopped in my tracks, turning my head towards Colette's voice.

"Why- why did you come?"

I took a breath, not really knowing what to say. Was there a reason for wanting to hang out with her now?

"I just... I just wanted to tell you that my mom had made those cookies you like so much. I'll bring you some on Monday." Shittiest excuse ever.

Yes, high school was starting again on Monday, and this time, I was excited about it. Luckily Jake would leave Colette alone and hang out with his friends.

"Great." She smiled widely, and I wasn't afraid to say, that made my day. "Call me tonight?"

Oh, and maybe that, too.

I nodded, with a little smile. "Yeah."
