The first time I found this abandoned yellow van was when I was five.

My dad had just died and I went to explore. I never really liked him, never really knew him for that matter. He used to grab me too hard. He never beat me, my brothers took care of that. He was always drunk and yelled incoherent things at my sister. He said she was a whore, just like mom. I didn't know what that meant at the time, but now that I know, I still don't understand why he said it. I guess I was always too young to understand. My brothers excused him, saying he was ill. I guess it was better to think about him that way.

That day, my sister Cara was late. She was with her new friend Nico and my brother Ben paid me no attention, so I managed to escape. Everyone was so distracted by the whole thing that they didn't notice I wasn't there. I got far into the woods and found that rusty van. It was old with mold in the ceiling and broken windows. I didn't care, it was warm and I could make it mine. It had a mattress and with new covers and pillows, I made it cozy.

When I was around seven they let me start fires at home, so I began doing it outside the van, too. That only made me stay even longer. I came to draw and read, most of the time. I played a little bit outside until it got dark and returned home. I was quiet, nobody noticed my absence. Specially when my sister a Cara moved in with Nico. They were having a baby and they kind of forgot about me. It was fine, I guess. I understood.

I came here almost everyday for the past four years. It was my little secret. Far from bullies, far from my noisy house. I never liked talking to people or listening to my family's loud chatting, so the place was perfect for me. Quiet, peaceful and...

Wait a second.

I caught my breath and stood up slowly from the mattress, trying not to make any noise.

The door opened.

Someone was here.
