It was peaceful for a few moments before Cody started tapping an irregular rhythm on the hardcover of my book. Irritated, I reached around a grabbed his hand, placing it on the table, my own remaining on top of his without pausing my reading.
"Y'know." He whispered. "If you wanted to hold my hand, all you had to do was ask." He withdrew his hand slowly, that condescending look on his face again.
Letting out a loud sigh, I marked my page and put my book back in my purse. "What is it that you want?"
He feigned shock. "Bree. What makes you think I want something?"
I rolled my eyes. "Uh, because you're here."
Seriously, does he not have anything to do besides torment me?
"Fine. You caught me." He grinned, folding his hands on top of the plastic tabletop.
"Alright, so what is it?" I leaned forward, one eyebrow raised.
He opened his mouth to answer, but Blaine came running into the large room, May looking slightly panicked as she followed.
"AMBERLEE! You are so dead!" He growled.
"Shit." I mumbled, ducking my head so all he would see is Cody. "Hide me, and I'll do whatever you want."
"What did you do?" He smirked, sitting up straighter.
"I colored all over his face with Sharpies." I sighed as Cody stood up, still blocking me from where Blaine was peering around the room.
"Good one. This way." He pushed me in front of him and we practically ran from the room.
Cody said we should go to his room, lay low. I reluctantly agreed, and we made our way to the room he and May shared, which happened to be just down the hall from Blaine and I's room.
"So, why did you deface your best friend?" Cody asked, flopping down onto his bed.
May and Cody had gotten the green and black room, and already Cody's half of the room was completely messy, with his blankets balled up on the floor, where May's bed was made neatly, it looked like no one had even lived in her half of the room.
Thinking about May brought me back to the conversation we'd had the night before.
"Cody..." I started, but froze when he gave me an inquiring look. Mentally slapping myself, I started again.
"May told me.. about, your mom." I said quietly, sitting next to him. He sighed and sat up, leaning against the headboard.
"Of course she did. She practically worships you." He grumbled. "Look, you just wouldn't understand."
I scoffed. "My mom isn't dead, but she's practically catatonic!" I snapped. Cody's face turned regretful.
"I'm sorry Bree, I didn-" I cut him off.
"No, you didn't. She gets like that when my father leaves for business trips. The only way I could get him to come home even for a little was by going on this trip. I wouldn't be here if I didn't need more drawings for my portfolio, and Blaine asked me." I sighed, wondering why I was spilling my whole life story to this guy.
"You'd do anything for him wouldn't you?" Cody asked, directing the subject away from my family.
"Oh course." I rolled my eyes. "He's always been there for me."
"But you guys like, never tried dating?"
I shook my head, "Nah."
"Why?" I chuckled lightly at this cynical guy looking completely baffled.
