on Tumblr. Y/n his youngest daughter gets injured and when John comes home he blames himself for the damage brought down on her and everyone else. (Set in season 4)

John's POV
Groaning from the hospital bed in my house I get up heading downstairs. The nurse they assigned tried to warn me. "Mr. Dutton go back to bed!" Picking my black hat off the hook I place it on my head leaving the kitchen. "Maggie, you're fired." I don't need to be babied by a random woman. Beth won't tell me anything about what has happened saying to just enjoy I'm home and alive. Tipping my head down in my hands I take a long sigh thinking that everything that happened is my fault. Kayce got shot, Beth has serious burns from when her office was blown up, my grandson Tate killed someone, the only person I don't know about is my youngest child. Y/n my daughter.

The front door creaked open yet I only lifted my head from my hands when I hear her voice. "Daddy?" Tears blur my vision but I know that voice anywhere, it's her. Her hair light brown like Kayce's with the same eye color as her dead mother. She's in a blue flannel, dark blue jeans, brown boots and a small gold clip in her hair. Still the same babygirl I last saw. But sadly my eyes catch something new. A brace on her right leg that clearly helps her stand as she stumbles over to fling her arms around my neck. "Daddy, you're alive!"

Tears started falling down my faster than I expected when I pull her to sit in my lap, clinging to her for dear life. Y/n reminds me so much of Evelyn by the way she handles horses with such a gentle hand. Sadly she was only 3 years old when her mother died, making her have no real memories of her mom. For my other children it's harder because they see the resemblance in their youngest sibling. The exact image of my wife Evelyn Dutton.

"Sweetheart I - I'm - oh you have no idea how happy I am to be holding you." I sniffed crying into her shoulder before she pulled away to look me in the eye tears falling as well. "I thought you were gone - when you didn't come home. I was terrified during the ranch shooting..." Brushing some hair from her face I weakly eyed her brace. "Is that why you have this, Y/n?"

She slowly nods her head taking in a deep breath not looking me in the eye. "A bullet  slammed into my knee making me almost paralyzed in this leg. The doctors said I can only walk with this brace. But..." She started sobbing uncontrollably so I gently rest a hand to her cheek concerned. "Honey...what's wrong?" She bawled her hands into fists blurting out. "I can't ride horses ever again!" I did this. I made it where she can't do the thing she loves.

"Dear god...this is my fault. It's all my fault." I get to my feet standing away from her, crying and throwing my hat across the porch. My wife died after riding a horse. Y/n has a way with horses like she can understand them. Now because of me she can never ride one ever again because of the leg brace. "Dad blame yourself. I don't blame you, I'll always love you no matter what." She spoke picking up my discarded hat and resting a hand to my shoulder with her freehand.

Glancing over my shoulder I turn on my feet wiping away tears at the same time as her. "Babygirl I love you too. And I'm sorry...I'm sorry for causing this to all of you, my children. Especially you, my little princess." I wrap my arms around her wincing a little because of my wounds but she lays her head on my chest snuggling into my embrace.

"I know you didn't mean anything of this to happen. You love all of us." She breathes out I take my hat from her hand, placing it back on my head. Whispering a promise into her hair never wanting to not be able to hold her in my arms once more. "From the bottom of my heart. I promise you Y/n. I'll make sure whoever sent the attack pays for hurting our family."

Nobody attacks the Dutton's and get away with it.
