"Where are we going, Ms. Casanova?" Cady asks, holding hands with Janis as her girlfriend drives them to their Christmas Eve date. Cady can already feel the ring practically burning a hole in her pocket. She tries to keep the nerves out of her voice as best she can.
"Our usual place," Janis replies, kissing Cady's knuckles a few times as they wait at a stoplight. Cady wiggles happily in her seat.
"Oh, yay. I can't wait."
"It's just dinner, babes," Janis chuckles.
"So? I get to spend time with you. It's Christmas. I get to eat. I'm happy."
"Good," Janis grins. "I'm happy too."

"Do you remember the last time we were here?" Cady asks quietly once they've been seated. Janis looks up from her menu and nods.
"Senior prom."
"Feels like forever ago," Cady sighs. "But also like yesterday at the same time."
"Time's tricky like that," Janis agrees. "But we've gotten to spend it together. That's nice."
"It is," Cady hums. "Best five years of my life."
"Mine too," Janis says quietly. "I love you."
"I love you too," Cady says, leaning across the table to kiss her briefly. "I'm kind of glad they got rid of that stupid fountain. Don't have to drag you away to stop you sticking your hand in it this time."
"I wanted to see if it was real!"
"Jayjay, how could a fountain be fake?"
"Sometimes they have things blocking it so you can't stick your hand in it," Janis says. "Or sometimes it's just a video of a fountain."
"They have things to block you from sticking your hand in it because you shouldn't be sticking your hand into fountains anyway," Cady retaliates with a giggle. "Goofy."
"You love me," Janis pouts.
"I do," Cady agrees, gently lacing their fingers together across their table. "I love you so much, my darling."
Janis flushes and suddenly feels the weight of the ring in her pocket much more than she did a second ago. "I love you too. What are you thinking about?"
"You," Cady says. "You looked so beautiful last time we were here. And here you are somehow more beautiful than last time."
Janis flushes scarlet and ducks down behind her menu with a flustered squeak. Cady laughs and gently pulls it down to see her girlfriend's face.
"You're so cute. Why are you hiding from me?"
"You're too smooth, I can't take it," Janis sighs. "My suave little redhead. You looked incredible last time we were here, too. And now." And hopefully you'll look even better on our wedding day.
"Why thank you," Cady purrs. The waiter comes over to take their orders. Janis chooses a lasagna dish, and Cady gets the grilled chicken. The waiter writes it down and takes their menus to give them some more space. Cady rests her arms on the table and smiles at her girlfriend. "We should come back here every year. New tradition. To celebrate."
