A little back story

You know, not everyone can say with certainty that they know the exact day they were conceived, but Evangeline could. Her mother, Sylvia Donahue, had been nineteen when she met the future father of her child on the campus of NYU on October 17, 1991. Her mother had refused to tell her the name of her biological father, but she would tell her that he was the smartest man she had ever met. They only spent one night together, but that was all it took for little Evie to be conceived. Sylvia always told her daughter, "I don't regret that night for one second because it means I get to be your mom."

Having gotten pregnant halfway through her getting her degree to become a psychologist Sylvia decided to move back home to Brooklyn to save money. She finished school with the help of her parents who surprisingly had supported her. They'd been disappointed when she wouldn't tell them who the father was, but hadn't pushed when they found out he was sending her money to support her and the baby.

July 8, 1992 Evangeline Elizabeth Donahue was born at 8:10 pm at New York Presbyterian Hospital. As she grew up her mother had been real with her about the lack of relationship with the mysterious man who had fathered her. He hadn't wanted to be a father, but made sure to keep up his responsibility by paying child support for her. Evie never received gifts or cards for her birthday or Christmas from him, but he made sure to send money every month. When she was little she'd hoped that one day when he was ready he would show up and they'd be a family.

That was her dream until her mom met Stellen Madsen when she was four and then she forgot about her 'sperm donor' as her Nana called him because now she had a real father who actually wanted her.

It was love at first sight for her parents or so her dad always said with a goofy smile. Her mom would just roll her eyes, but Sylvia couldn't hide the grin or her love filled eyes for the man who had swept her off her feet. Stellen was everything you'd ever want in a dad. Kind and caring he always put her mother and Evie first. He showed up to every recital and parent/teacher conference. Kissed away her tears when she scraped her knees and always tucked her into bed every night.

Within the first year of them being together her mother got pregnant with Evie's baby brother, Sten. The moment Sten had been born Evie had declared him to be her best friend and that was that. Sure he could be annoying, but that was the job of a younger brother. Even so the siblings were inseparable. Always getting into mischief together and being each other's biggest defenders.

In 2006 when she turned 14 they briefly moved to Massachusetts and life was good for the Madsen's. That is until April 7th, 2008. That day their perfect life had been shattered when a drunk driver hit Sylvia's car going 90 in a 35. She'd died three days later from her massive internal injuries leaving her family devastated. The light seemed to go out in their lives with her gone. Evie felt adrift. Her only biological parent who had wanted her was gone and she didn't know what was going to happen to her now both in her path with her career and who was to be her guardian since she was still under age. She was in her third year of college and didn't know if she was going to go back or not. Her mother had always been one of her biggest supporters and with her gone she'd lost all motivation for school.

Stellen had firmly sat her down after the funeral and told her plainly, "Blood or not you're my daughter. Do you understand me, Evangeline Madsen? It is why I gave you my last name. You're mine and this will always be your home, but your mother wanted you to finish school. Make your mother proud and live your dream." Sobbing in each other's arms, Stellen had completely solidified their bond as father and daughter with his declaration and support. So she went back to school after a brief break to mourn her mother.

The only good thing about her mystery sperm donor was the financial support he'd provided. Sylvia and Stellen had saved every cent of that money, minus the little bit they used for her wants, they saved everything for Evie's future. Stellen had set up a trust for college and whatever was left was to be used for her first apartment, car and expenses, but Evangeline Madsen was smart. Like crazy genius level smart.
