Marinette's POV
9:32 am
I gazed at the back of Adrien's golden hair that looked like a million pure gold stars bundled into a head of hair. He was honestly the most perfect person I've ever met. Alya caught me staring at his hair and hit my arm with her elbow.
"You should tell him!" she said. "I know it isn't that easy, but.." I cut her off.
"No way, Alya!" I said, bumping her arm back giggling, catching some looks from our classmates. We talked a lot in class that day ignoring Ms. Bustier who was teaching us the basics of great common factor. Alya and I have a sleepover planned tomorrow night and we decided to plan the snacks, activities and movies then since we had nothing better to do. We got our stuff and ran out the door to see the whole group.
Rose greeted me with a big hug and shining eyes. "Did you tell Adrien yet?" she asked, the eyes she made while asking me forcing me to feel guilty as I told her no.
"Look, I know you're in love with Adrien or whatever, but most people never end up with their boyfriend from high school. Maybe you should just drop it," Alix said. Alix had a point, but the overwhelming desire of mine to be with Adrien said otherwise.
"High school is an acceptable age to start dating," remarked Mylene. "You might not feel like it was that important ten years later or so, but it feels important now. Isn't that all that matters?"
"I think Marinette should go for it!" Rose said.
"Hey Marinette, can I tell you my advice in private?" mumbled Juleka. I nodded. We went to an isolated part of the school soccer field and Juleka started to talk.
"When I found out I had a crush on Rose, I was really scared to tell her. But then I did, and it was the best decision I've ever made. I know it might be scary. but think of the things that could come of it. Besides, I'm sure everyone would treat you to a banana split at Andre's if he said no," said Juleka. The last sentence made me giggle a little.
Juleka was right. She's grown so much from Rose's influence in such little time and would never have accomplished that without Rose. I need to ask Adrien out. Moved by Juleka's encouraging words, I grabbed Mylene's earth-themed ballpoint pen and a piece of paper. I decided to write a script so I wouldn't trip over my words for the 5354th time. By the time the bell rang for history class, I wrote down a draft of what I was going to say to Adrien. It was a bit cheesy, sure, but Adrien seemed like the person who would like that kind of stuff. Plus, I wanted to practice my poetry.
I walked down the hallway smiling to myself imagining the best possible outcome: Adrien and I would start dating, we'd give Lila and Chloe the middle finger, we'd have three- no two kids and a hamster. I'm not sure what Adrien would want to name the hamster, but I would name it-
"Marinette, come on!" Alya said. "We're gonna be late!"
Lila's POV
10:40 am
"Alright, class, settle down! First thing we're going to do is work on our projects with our partners," Ms. Bustier said.
Marinette took her drawing of what looked like a hamster (there was a name on the paper, but it was too blurry to see). She was lucky, even though she didn't know it yet, that I decided to keep her precious little secret. I would've spread the rumor if it was something embarrassing, but being Ladybug doesn't really fit that bill. Plus, Adrien has a crush on Ladybug, so that would not go well for me.
"I finished the essay on our topic, I'm gonna go on my phone now. Also, want to meet same place same time today?" I said to Marinette.
"Fine," she grumbled. It was pretty easy to tell that Marinette wanted help on the project, just not from Lie-la, the sorceress of evil or something stupid like that.
I texted Kagami whiled Marinette continued the designing of the poster. She sent me a picture of the painting of her mother she was working on. Kagami was amazing at capturing someone's entire personality with just one picture of their face. Minutes went by like seconds as we talked about our moms. Oh, I don't think I've told you about my mom yet, right?
My mom is a worker at a nearby chain restaurant. She doesn't get paid well and she has to work long hours, but she won't find another job. I don't know why. I don't have a dad, or at least I've never met him. Mom still lives with me, but it feels like she doesn't a lot of the time. Kagami's mom is what Kagami calls a tiger mom. Kagami says she pushes her to the limit and sometimes past it with fencing and won't hear it if Kagami is interested in something else. We don't have awesome parent situations, let's put it that way. It's nice talking to someone like her.
Marinette's POV
The next day, 3:00 pm
I took my script of my backpack as I saw Adrien talking to Nino a few feet away. I almost fell over, but Alya caught me.
"You can do it, Marinette," Alya said. "Remember, I'll be watching the whole thing and recording. If he says no, I'll delete the video. If he says yes, I'll keep it as a souvenir."
I took a nice long breath and attempted to put my right foot one step closer to Adrien. Then I put my left foot one step closer to Adrien. I kept repeating these two steps until I was one foot away from my crush.
"Hi, Adrik- Adrien!! You- I have something to k- tell you!!!" I said using finger guns.
"Okay, what is it?" Adrien asked. He was wearing his usual outfit with his hair perfectly combed and the scarf that I gave him (Sometimes I wonder what happened with that scarf. He said it was from his father, but I gave it to him in a wrapped present with my name on it. Lila probably had something to do with it. Maybe Chloe. Or maybe his father forgot to give his own son a present so he took mine.) He blinked his magical green eyes and I almost fainted with only the thought of Alya behind a wall and not behind me to keep me upright.
"Uhm, not here! There!" I pointed to under the school stairs as I saw that Nino was standing next him. Nino was wearing his usual headphones (with no music playing, of course), a cap, and a confused expression. He was almost as clueless as Adrien himself. Almost.
"Okay," Adrien replied confusedly. We walked awkwardly to the stairs. I took the folded paper out of my pocket and saw someone drew the words "Good luck!" in pink crayon accompanied by a sparkly unicorn covered with dried pink glitter glue.
I recited the script:
Dear Adrien,
I love you. I always have, ever since you gave me your umbrella. I want to be your girlfriend. I want to kiss you.
Love, Marinette
Yeah, I decided to scratch the poetry idea and go with simplicity. This way, Adrien can't misunderstand me again. Plus, poetry isn't exactly my forte, and I wanted this letter to be perfect. It seemed like hours before Adrien opened his mouth.
"I'm sorry, Marinette, but I'm in love with... someone else," Adrien said with guilt written on his face. By the time I looked at his though, I was already sobbing.
"N-no, i-its- its f-fine," I tried to say in sobbing gibberish. I also tried to smile, but sobbing gibberish wouldn't let me do that either. In that case, I decided to just run away crying. I ran out the campus with my backpack now covered in tears and wouldn't stop till I got to the park.
I cried into my white shirt and threw my crumpled script into the trash. I heard Tikki trying to comfort me from inside my purse, but I drowned out her voice with my sobs in despair.
Then I realized I invited Lila to the very park I was bawling my eyes out at. Of course, by the time I realized that and took my phone out to cancel our plans, she arrived.
