I step inside the glass tube and try not to cry as I am lifted into the arena. As its a quell, there must be something special, apart from there being more competition. I gasp when I see the arena. Each tribute has their own bridge, attached with ropes, to a large wooden platform, on which stands the empty cornucopia, underneath which lies lava. I can't see any reason to go towards it, but then I see the water. 60 water bottles lie there, and there probably isn't any other way to get water. I have to go for the water, I have no choice. The countdown begins. Because there are 60 of us, the circle is the same size, the tributes are just closer together. It reassures me that on one side is Saxon, and on the other is Elixir, who gives me a grim smile. The countdown ends, and I sprint to the Cornucopia, along with about half the tributes. They must have a few people in their alliance who are getting it for them. I'm fast, but not fast enough. The careers reach it first, and they turn round and start pushing the other tributes into the lava. I dodge round the girl from 4, Lilah I think her name is, and grab 5 of the water bottles. They are heavy and they slow me down but at last I reach the trees, which lie around the edge of the lava. I see Saxon coming too with another 3 bottles, and together we race through the woods to our alliances' agreed meeting place. We said we would meet the opposite direction from the cornucopia, in line with Elixir's disk. Finally we see them up a tree. Everyone is there, except Lucas and Piper.
"Where are they?" I say, a hint of panic rising in my voice.
"I don't know," says Caspar, "let's give them 10 minutes." He looks up at me, and I realise how much I like him. His quick, easy smile, the way he cares about everyone in the group. And the good thing is, I think he likes me back.
At that moment there is a crash. Everyone tenses, and Caspar steps protectively in front of me. Piper bursts through the undergrowth, panting hard.
"Where's Lucas?" asks Emilé, looking up from a stick he is fiddling with. I notice suddenly that is has a sharp pointed end. Piper just shakes her head and bursts into tears.
