BOOM! Im quickly awoken by the cannon. This wakes everyone, and we come down from the trees and begin to organise ourselves. Yesterday we got as far away from the cornucopia as possible, today we need to find food. I'm one of the quieter ones in the alliance, I don't feel comfortable around this many people, and I don't trust Piper. Something about her makes me feel uneasy. Saxon seems to take charge, and Caspar, Lana, Elixir and him spread out to go hunting. Piper and Kain go off to find water and Emilé and me stay to guard the camp. Emilé sits down and begins to sharpen a stick which he passes to me, and then does the same for himself. The hunters have 3 knives between them, the prize from Caspar's high training score. We make a spear for everyone in the alliance. About an hour later, the hunting party comes back, with 3 strange birds and some plants.
"Are you sure they are edible?" I say cautiously, prodding the leaves with my stick.
"Certain. They-" Elixir is cut off, and she slumps to the ground, a thick spear in her neck. BOOM. We all whip round, to see Thor, standing there, smiling evilly. Before anyone can think of what to do next, Enmity, Aaron and another boy I don't recognise start to attack is from all sides. The four of them also have sharpened sticks and stones as weapons. Enmity throws himself at Saxon, who dodges and the two fight on the ground. Thor himself goes for Kain, and the other boy leaps on top of Caspar. I feel a sharp pain in my arm and see Aaron behind me. Before I can think, he lunges on top of me. His spear comes down and I move my head away just in time. Kain's screams are suddenly cut off and I surge upwards, grab a stone that lies on the ground near me, and crack it against his skull. He goes limp. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM. Thor races away through the trees, Enmity limping after him.
I look at the rest of our alliance. Saxon is crouched down, winded, Kain is slumped on the floor unconscious. Elixir lies dead in the corner, a pool of blood surrounding her head like a halo. Then I see Piper. She is slumped against a tree, her green eyes sightless. She is at an odd angle, I'm guessing her neck is broken. Me and Lana seem to be the only ones still ok, apart from the gash on my arm. Someone bursts through the trees, and I grab my stick, but at closer glance it's only Caspar. Somehow he looks even more powerful than normal, despite a black eye from his tussle with with the other boy. Aaron and the other boy are in a bad way though, lying dead beside Piper and Elixir.
"We had better get moving," I say. I know it sounds heartless, but what other choice do we have? The hovercraft will want to get the bodies. I crouch beside Elixir, bending my head so the others can't see my tears. Another innocent kid to add to the list of Snows murders.Kain's POV
I slowly open my eyes. My head hurts so badly, and I wretch in the dirt. Caspar rushes over to comfort me. Thor threw me against a tree and he was going to kill me, but Piper saved my life. And it breaks my heart to see her lying dead a few feet away. Caspar picks me up and puts me on his back.
"What are you doing?" I ask, but speaking makes my head hurt so I shut up.
"We have to move, the hovercrafts coming for the dead bodies," he says.
"Ok" is all I can manage, and I drift back off to sleep.Caspar's POV
Shes so beautiful, and she doesn't even realise. Carrying her makes me realise how delicate she is.
After the group of us have walked for about an hour, Saxon says we should stop. I'm exhausted, but I want to get into the cover of really dense branches. To stop here would be suicidal.
"No," I say firmly. "Let's go for another 10 minutes until we find somewhere safer." Something that is scaring me is that we haven't seen much of the career alliance, and we've barely heard any cannons go. They must be planning some massive attacking on someone, and chances are its us. We've been trampling through the forest all afternoon, extra slowly because of injuries. If there was a fight, we would be at a severe disadvantage. Saxon turns to face me. I can see the disbelief on his face.
"Look Caspar, it's almost dark, we're all tired and I just want to rest!" He is almost shouting now. But can't he use his brain, what the heck is the point of resting, if you are probably going to wake up to a full scale career attack. I turn and carry on walking. "Caspar!" Come back!
"No! I'm finding a proper place to sleep!" I yell. I almost laugh as Saxon, Lily and Lana start to put down their stuff. They're in the middle of a stupid field!
After walking for a further 5 minutes I turn to see Emilé behind me.
"I'm coming with you." He says, " I don't agree with Saxon, and now they've lit a fire."
"Are you actually joking?" How much more ridiculous could this get?
"No. That tree there looks good for sleeping though."
"You're right." Emilé uses his brain. I feel safer with him than I did with any of the others from the alliance. He's strong too, he proved that in the fight when he managed to fend of Enmity with me. And Enmity is as good, if not better, than any career. Kain is awake now, and she manages to climb up the tree with my help. We eat some berries and roots, I'm not stupid enough to light a fire to cool the meat, and watch as the Capitol seal comes up in the night sky. Two careers from 1 and 2 died today, which is surprising. The boy that attacked us with Thor, turns out he was from district 3. None from 4. Two more from 5 and 6. Aaron from seven. Then Piper and Elixir. 3 from 10. None from 11 or 12. 29 tributes left. The career alliance now has 14 tributes in, our 'alliance' has 6, Thor and Enmity, which leaves 7 tributes who are going solo. And I don't think we can avoid of the inevitable any longer. We need to fight the careers.
