I awake to the familiar boom of the cannon, and hear screams. And the chilling thing is, they're coming from the direction of Saxon's little camp. Me and Caspar jump down from the tree, Kain behind us, she can't sleep forever. We sprint towards the noise, and face a full scale career attack. There are at least 10 of them, fighting with all their might against a small and quite weak alliance.
"Stay here and help people who are wounded," I say to Kain, who nods and cowers into the bushes. Caspar hands me one of the knives he got from his high training score, and we throw ourselves into battle.
I slam into the first career, Carrie I think her name is, and manage to stab her arm with my knife before she throws me off. We fight on the ground, but I'm too strong for her, I pin her down. BOOM! Before I've even stood up, a new, much stronger, heavier weight crushes me to the floor. I see Quartz, probably the strongest career, standing over me, a victorious smile on his face.
"This is payback for Lilah," he says, and I remember her screams as I pushed her over the side of the bridge into the lava at the bloodbath. He runs his knife down my face, making blood run into my eyes. I feel the knife blade against my neck, he means to do this painfully and slowly. The edges of my vision go black, and I'm too weak to struggle. I'm just about to give up, when the weight suddenly lifts. I see Anouk standing over me, knife in hand. She was always quiet and I never really spoke to her, but she seemed good friends with Kain. I didn't even realise she was still alive. Quartz lies beside me, his breathing shallow. I manage to sit up, and realise the fight is over. The remaining careers have gone, probably waiting for a better chance to strike. The effects of their attack is devastating. Including Carrie and Quartz, there are 5 careers lying dead on the ground. Considering there were 5 of us and about 10 of them, I think we did pretty well. I hear a small scream and see Kain racing towards an unmoving tribute. With a jolt, I realise it's Saxon. I manage to half walk, half drag myself to where Kain and Lana are kneeling over Saxon. He takes quick, gasping breathes, and there is a deep cut on his chest.
"You have to win for me," he says, struggling to speak, "all of you."
"We will. And when we do, we'll think of you." I choke out. I can't believe Saxon, the one who was always willing to take charge, who always cared for everyone in the group, wasn't going to make it.
BOOM! I turn away, and our alliance follows, picking up their stuff and trailing after me, their heads bowed with sadness. I see a flash out the corner of my eye, and Anouk disappears into the trees. I haven't even thanked her, and she must be injured in someway after that fight.
Our next priority is water. All our bottles have been empty for some time, and everyone in our group is hungry. All I can think of now though is that there is only one winner. And there are 5 of us left in our alliance, me, Caspar, Lana, Lily and Kain, who is trailing behind.
"We have to find water," I say,"there must be some near here." I say, trying to sound kind of confident. We reach a clearing in the forest, where there is a path, dense trees on either side. The open space makes me feel uncomfortable. Something shimmers about 100m down the path. And suddenly, I know what it is. "Water!" I cry, and begin to race down the path, the others following me at full pelt. This is the last burst of energy, before all of us collapse. As I reach the water, I slow, and fill the water bottles. Water has never tasted so good. Lily suddenly lets out a cry.
"Look! There's a tunnel! It would be such a good shelter, and if we blocked off the entrance, no one would ever know we had been there."
We all gather round, happy that finally something good has happened. Maybe the odds are in our favour after all.
