There was still loads of food out, which was good as Marinette had forgotten to set aside a specific round of cheese for Plagg in all that happened.

Adrien and Marinette yawned and dragged themselves to bed, leaving far too much cleaning for themselves in the morning. Adrien drew Marinette to his side and kissed her forehead. "You were so good, putting the announcement that way. I'm sorry I spoiled your surprise, M'lady."

Marinette smiled softly. "I don't think it was spoiled really. I definitely surprised you. Just much earlier than expected. Besides, I think it gave you something to look forward to."

Adrien nodded. "Yes, plus, I think it's why I never felt the power of the wish hanging over me."

Marinette pulled away to look him in the eyes. "Not even when you stood there, looking at yourself, so young, before all the awful truth gets revealed?"

Adrien brushed her silky black hair away from her face thoughtfully. "You know, I thought when I saw myself younger, I'd feel about him the way I felt seeing you so young; like I needed to shield you, to be a father figure and help you get ready."

Marinette chuckled softly. "Is that what you thought? Like I'm not perfectly capable?"

Adrien laughed too. "We were so much younger than I'm comfortable thinking of now. When I think of how young I was when my father ..." and Adrien stared hard as a wellspring of hurt and anger tried to rise over him.
Marinette embraced him, pressing her cheek to his.

Adrien softened instantly. "But it was weird, Marinette. I remember his side, looking up at me, thinking what an amazing dad I looked like. Thinking I looked just like the father I'd needed. Being so happy for my kid." He sighed happily.

"And what did you think this side?"

Adrien rested both his hands down on Marinette's slim belly, reaching his spirit out so he could feel the newest little one of his Lady's creations.
"Exactly the same thing.
"I fathered myself the whole time. Everything I am, he built. And I'm proud to have been him."

Somewhere, sometime in the distant future, a cleaner lends another cleaner an old wooden broom. "Don't lose that one, Jean; that broom is the best. It just keeps going."
