The plane landed a couple hours later at the avengers headquarters. I had to remind myself to breath and act sensible as I stepped out of the plane and looked at the view. America was so much bigger than I had thought, and so much cooler than the old cinder block box that I grew up in. "I'll take this and look it over, kid you can help put together what you need to help him." Tony glanced over my way and pointed at Hawkeye, or Clint, as I had been told.
"What do we do?" The doctor attending to Clint asked me. Clint had started stirring and she looked down at him in concern. "Don't worry, the process is painless, so he doesn't have to go under." I helped set up the device the best I could, remembering how to replicate it using what was available in the doctor. "Oh it's my little deaf friend." Clint laughed when he gained complete consciousness. "I told you I'm not deaf." I replied. "I get quiet like that when I'm scared or have anxiety attacks. For some reason I'm not able to talk when they happen so I learned sign language to be able to communicate with my siblings." He nodded and looked over at the device. "What's that?"
"We are basically 3D printing DNA." Bruce replied to him in amazement.
"By the way, how did you get here?" Clint asked me, looking up at the ceiling.
"She's a stowaway." Natasha answered.
Not to be that person, but it made me uncomfortable so I turned to Natasha. "Sorry, but could you use they/them pronouns for me? It just makes me more comfortable."Natasha shrugged. "Sure, sorry about that."
It wasn't sarcastic or annoyed like the guards when I tried to correct them, and I was a more rude correcting them about it because they laughed at me when I said I felt more comfortable with a different name."Great I'll be partially made of plastic, will that technically make me a cyborg?" Clint asked.
"I can assure you that you'll still be made 100 percent human, you'll still be able to impress the ladies."
"I have a girlfriend."
"Unfortunately I can't help with that."A weird prickle at what Clint had said about having a girlfriend, it was a lie. I've been able to tell that I was being lied to for as long as I could remember. I knew that I hadn't really been living in some kind of x-men institute, it had all just been an experiment. I just couldn't think of a different name, calling it a prison seemed to terrible even for me, but that's what it was. A prison.
"I researched the kids we found at the institute." Said a woman that I'd seen but hadn't spoken to yet. She only just seemed to notice I was standing there. "You're Nevaeh right?" She asked me. "Yes but I go by Peyton."
"Ok. It says here your last name is... Coulson?"
I nodded, is that shock on everyone else's face? "Do you by any means know who Phil Coulson is?" The woman asked. I shook my head, was he my dad?
"So what if Phil had a kid?" Tony asked, coming in the room with a smoothie. "I don't think they're his kid, I mean, he wouldn't actually leave a child in a place like that, especially if he found out the kid had powers." Natasha said uncertainly. "You can talk to nick, he'll be here later right?" Steve asked, also coming in. "Sure, come on, we have some doctors who want to look at you." The woman said. I stepped backwards. Me and doctors don't exactly get along. "It's alright, all we want to do is make sure you're healthy." The doctor who had been looking after Clint told me. I nodded and followed.
It wasn't that bad, it was how I imagined a normal visit to the pediatrician would be. Until the needles. "What's in those?" I asked, coiling away, the sterile scent of a hospital filled my noses and, in addition to the sight of the needles, made me nauseous. "It's just typical vaccines, flu, tetanus, things like that, it's not bad." The doctor, who I learned was named dr. Helen Cho, tried to reassure me. "In the institute they would poke me with needles that made me sick, or tired, or not be able to use my powers for a while." I said, I realized I might've said that with a tone of accusation and really wished it didn't come across like that. "I promise, none of these to do that." She smiled kindly. I swallowed and nodded.
Little pinpricks, nothing more than that, just a brief moment of pain that passed as quickly as it came, but it still didn't help the feeling of them wiping your skin with a cotton round and the clinking as they pick up the syringe. I really don't like needles. I was pale and my breath was coming in short bursts, I worked on controlling my breathing again. "Thank you" I signed to Dr. Cho. "Sorry I don't understand what you said, but is it alright if I let the others in? They want to talk." I probably should've waited until I found my voice again, but I nodded to show her I'm alright.
The 6 come in with the woman I spoke to earlier and a man with dark skin and an eyepatch. He was balding. That was my first thought of him. He had no hair. I don't know why I noticed that and not his eyepatch or the air of authority he carried. Just the top of his head.
"Maria here says you might be related to agent Coulson." He said simply. I looked around for someone who might be "Coulson" but didn't see anyone else new. "I have evidence to believe he's your uncle, 3 years ago, while we gathering supers for the avengers initiative, he mentioned thinking he had a niece somewhere in Sokovia that his brother had given away. Never got the chance to go."
I was confused, so someone had wanted to get me out of there, I had family who cared about me on some level, but he didn't get the chance?
"Why? What happened to him?" I asked, finding my voice quicker than I thought I would. I rubbed my fingers over the band-aid on my shoulder, just to have something to do with my hands. "He was killed by the threat the avengers were fighting before they had a chance to defeat it.
Part of me felt sad for Coulson, I don't know why, I'd never met him, but if he was my last family...
"Who killed him?" I asked, part of me whispered about how they didn't want to know the answer, but the louder part was talking a little louder than I usually do, coming up with scenarios of what happened.Everyone looked over with an accusing glance at Thor, and for a wild moment i'd thought that he killed my supposed uncle, before thinking, that's crazy, why would the avengers recruit someone who killed their friend?
"My brother tried to take over earth, Coulson tried standing up to him and it got him stabbed in the back." I nodded. And looked at my feet.
