I knew I could be stubborn before, it was a trait I'd always possessed. I've always refused to allow people to tell me what I can and can't do, even when their intentions are in the right place. 9 times out of 10, it's ended up in me getting fucked over. I've gotten shot because of it.

But I don't think I fully learned my lesson until I now sat on the driveway in front of the garage, wincing in pain as I ran my hand up and down my leg to ease the throb.

Today was Thursday, meaning Ellen had come back home to help finish packing the house. We had a couple of potential buyers looking to check it out next week so it was imperative that it was in top shape.

Since there were so many boxes, I told Harry about it and he offered to cancel our lesson to help us get them into the moving truck and to even drive the truck to the storage unit a couple of blocks down. I told him it was no big deal and we could move them ourselves, but Miranda (who I had on the phone) quickly intervened, cursing at me in Spanish for denying his help. "Estoy embarazada, ¿crees que quiero levantar pesadas cajas de?" I'm pregnant, do you think I want to lift heavy ass boxes?

To be honest, I think Miranda enjoyed Harry's company. She didn't know anything that happened a few weeks ago because I didn't want to worry her. If I came home with a gunshot wound with my car twenty minutes down the road she'd have a heart attack. But she'd seen a decent amount of Harry, recently since he was constantly there to check how I was doing.

If I didn't know any better, I'd think he just wanted an excuse to see me. Not that the excited feeling in my stomach minded whenever Miranda would call out, "Mija, Harry's here!"

Thankfully, Harry was able to get me to the hospital. Not after hurriedly dropping his niece off at his sister's house as I woke up in and out of my daze, mumbling incoherent sayings.

The bullet took less than five minutes to get out, Harry had told me, and it was wrapped up in less. I was discharged a couple of hours later but I didn't want to go home, for obvious reasons. So Harry allowed me to stay with him for the next two or three days. It wasn't all in good nature though. I spent those few days getting snapped at and reminded how stupid and impulsive my decision was, and I couldn't be mad at him. There's that stubbornness in me, again.

I was in a groggy mood, living off of his couch and only getting up to shower. He spent most of the day gone. Only telling me that he was handling everything. I felt a twinge of guilt at his words that had gone softer over the days. I know he was trying to help, and that I possibly fucked up everything even more seeing that Kenneth got away with my flash drive and Officer Soto was still running for mayor.

But there was nothing he had against me. Soto didn't know I was in his house. I guess I can thank Harry for that- for cleaning my mess, and Kenneth- for not telling his dad. As long as he got to shoot me back in the leg I don't think he cares. It doesn't change the fact that I still have to face Ryder in court in a few weeks and I'm nowhere near ready.

Yet another thing my mothers don't know about.

Harry comes down to sit next to me, his curls matted to his forehead in perspiration as he presses his lips together, inhaling a heavy breath through his nostrils. His gray teeshirt was darkened in areas the sweat had drenched and I can't help but stare at him, the pain in my leg suddenly subsiding. I know I was probably sweating too since April had invited warmer weather with the sunset, but I didn't look nearly as hot as he did.

"You okay?"

"Yeah, I dropped something on my leg," I give him a knowing look and he knows which leg I'm talking about.
