"Finally out of that shit-hole," Victoria said to herself.
It was her eighteenth birthday and since no one had adopted her, she need to leave the orphanage. She was the oldest one in the orphanage and she felt out of place. She was glad to finally be out of there.
Ever since Keith had been adopted, she failed to make new friends, her grades dropped and she felt lonely. It may sound cliché, but Keith was the only thing that kept her going. No one would ever give her a second glance, so she just gave up on trying to meet new people.
She fidgeted with the stainless steel ring on her left ring finger at the thought of Keith. Technically she wasn't actually married so she shouldn't keep the ring on her left hand, but she liked to keep the ring on her wedding finger, hoping one day, she would be able to marry Keith for real. Her dream was only short-lived as she realized she hasn't heard from him in six years and she'll never see him again.
For all I know, he could be on the other side of the country... She thought to herself
Victoria only had a small backpack containing a few of her things. She didn't have anywhere to go. She didn't have much money so a motel would be her best option. But if she blew all her money on motels, she wouldn't have money for food, water and other essentials.
Victoria wandered around town. She was looking for a place to sleep, and maybe even a job.
The sun had begun to set and she had come across a vacant lot. Walking into it, she noticed the old furniture and other trash people had thrown away.
Sitting under one of the trees, she noticed a boy. He looked fairly young - maybe around twelve years old - he had dark, greasy hair and chocolate brown eyes.
She had gone to go sit on one of the old sofas when the boy finally realized her presence. The boy only looked at her for a few seconds before averting his gaze from her.
"What's your name?" Victoria called out after a few seconds, hoping to befriend the young boy. The boy looked over at her, a frightened expression on his face.
"Johnny," He said, pausing for a brief moment before continuing. "Cade." The boy gave her a look as if asking what her name was.
"Victoria Landcaster." She answered, moving to sit beside him under the tree. "It's nice to meet you, Johnny." She said, sticking out her hand for Johnny to shake. Johnny shyly took her hand in his and shook it before letting go.
With newfound confidence, Johnny spoke up, "Are you new around here?"
Victoria shook her head. "I used to live in an orphanage a few miles back." She jerked her thumb over her shoulder, pointing in the direction she came from. "It was my eighteenth birthday today, and since I never got adopted, I had to leave."
"Oh," Johnny said quietly. "Happy Birthday, I guess." He smiled softly.
"Thanks, Johnny." She smiled back. "What about you? Do you live around here?"
"I live down the street," Johnny pointed in the direction of his house, "But I don't like to stay there too often, so I usually come here or to my friend's house." He explained.
"How come you don't like stayin' 'round your house?" Victoria asked. Johnny shifted uncomfortably and looked away from Victoria's gaze. Victoria sensed that he was uncomfortable, so she changed the topic.
"How old are you, Johnny?" She asked.
"Sixteen," Johnny answered, finally looking back at her.
"Oh, wow," Victoria said. "I thought you were like, twelve, or something." She chuckled a bit at the end, Johnny joining in as well.
"Yeah, I guess I do look a little young," Johnny said, cracking a soft smile.
Johnny and Victoria continued chatting for a little while and getting to know each other. Victoria got excited at the thought of hopefully making a new friend.
"Johnny, you don't mind if I stay here tonight, do you?" Victoria asked, not really knowing where else to stay.
"Yeah, 'course I don't mind," Johnny answered, flashing a toothy grin, excited to have some company during the night.
The sleeping situation was rather uncomfortable. Among the mess in the lot were a car seat and a few torn-up sofas. Johnny and Victoria took a sofa each. Victoria used her backpack as a pillow, not the most ideal for sleeping on, but it'll have to do. Johnny, on the other hand, rested his head on his arms, lying on his stomach.
"Good night, Victoria," Johnny murmured, eyes drifting shut.
"You too, Johnny," Victoria replied, a sleepy tone evident in her voice.
When Victoria woke up the next morning, she felt stiffness in her back, never having slept on something that uncomfortable. She sat up and stretched with a groan before rubbing her eyes.
The sun had almost fully risen, casting a light pink glow on the sky. It was late into summer and she guess it was around seven-thirty in the morning.
Remembering the events of last night, she turned to look at the couch Johnny had claimed for the night. He was still sleeping, but he was shifting around a bit, not fully awake.
Not wanting to wake him, Victoria waited patiently for him to wake from his slumber. Not long after, Johnny stirred awake with a yawn. He blinked his eyes a few times before looking at Victoria.
"Hey," He smiled softly at her.
Victoria returned the smile, "Did you sleep well?"
"Ehh, you can only be so comfortable on a couch." Johnny chuckled lightly. Victoria nodded her head in agreement.
"Hey Johnny, you got a watch on you?" Victoria asked, wondering the time.
Johnny shook his head, "No, sorry."
"That's alright."
Johnny had started to get up from the couch and leave the lot, but then he remembered he couldn't just leave Victoria alone.
"Hey Victoria, do you have anywhere to go?" Johnny asked her.
"No, I don't. I was kind of just planning to look for a job, maybe a motel to stay at."
Johnny smiled softly. "I know where you can get a job, I can show you if you'd like."
"Yeah, I'd like that. Thanks." Victoria said with a warm smile.
"It's no problem," Johnny replied. "It's a gas station only a few blocks away." He explained. Victoria nodded her head and Johnny led the way down the road.
