Victoria got up relatively early the following day to prepare for her shift at the DX, which started at ten o'clock.
She took a quick shower and washed her hair, knowing she wouldn't have time after work. Victoria felt oddly giddy, probably because of her date later that night. She never thought she'd ever be in a relationship with her best friend like this.
Once she got out of the shower, she put on her uniform and let her hair dry in its natural wavy state.
For breakfast, she had a bowl of cereal while Carol ate a slice of toast with some coffee. Wendy was in the family room playing with a few of her toys while she waited for Keith to get out of the shower and make her scrambled eggs. According to her, his were the best, and Victoria just had to agree.
She had just finished washing her empty bowl when Keith came out from the washroom, hair greased back and wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Victoria flashed him a smile as he rubbed Wendy's hair on his way to the kitchen.
"Need a lift to work?" He asked as he walked past Victoria to grab the eggs in the fridge.
"No, that's okay. Sodapop said Darry could pick me up since he's driving him and Steve. Thanks though!" Victoria smiled again.
"It's no problem, tell 'em I say hi!" Keith returned the grin. There was a sudden honk of a car horn as Victoria put the bowl away.
"That's probably them, I better get going. I'll see you later!" Victoria said as she rushed to the door to slip on her shoes. She then ran down the porch steps and hopped into Darry's truck.
"Morning everyone!" She greeted.
"Good morning, how are you?" Darry asked
"Fine, thanks. And you?"
"Good."
"Morning Vicky!" Sodapop grinned wide. Steven just nodded and smiled in Victoria's direction.
"Thank you for giving me a lift, Darry."
"It's no problem at all."
"So, how's life at Two-Bit's house?" Sodapop asked.
"It's good I guess, his sister is super sweet, just like her mom. Oh! He says hello, by the way."
"I love Wendy! She's my best friend!" Soda exclaimed excitedly. Darry chuckled as he pulled into the parking lot of the gas station. "Victoria, we would like to have you over for dinner tonight again. Would you mind passing along the message to Two-Bit as well?" Darry asked.
"Oh, I would love to! But I have plans..."
"Oh that's alright, just tell him for me then? If that's okay." Darry said.
"My plans are with Keith, actually," Victoria added shyly.
"Oh?" Steve questioned.
"Oh my God! You need to tell me! Where are you going? When are you going? What are you doing? Is it a date? Are you guys already dating? Please, please, please tell me!" Sodapop begged.
"As much as I'd love to hear about Victoria's love life, I've go to get to work, and so do you three. So, if you don't mind, please get out." Darry said, giving Victoria a brief smile as a blush took over her cheeks.
The three of them hopped out of Darry's truck and headed into the gas station. Soda goes in from the garage, and Steve and Victoria enter from the front door.
The DX was busy for a Friday afternoon, so Victoria was kept busy at the cash register. Around quarter-to-one, Dally came in with a bag of takeout from The Dingo, a nearby diner.
"Did you eat lunch today?" Dally asked, setting the brown paper bag on the counter.
"No, I was in a rush and forgot to pack one. Why?" Victoria pondered.
"It's a good thing I'm thoughtful, then," Dally said taking a container of fries out of the bag and passing it over to Victoria. She looked sceptically between the fries and Dally. "What?" He asked. "They're from The Dingo, I didn't do anything to them, I swear!" He threw his hands up in surrender.
"No, I don't think you tampered with them..." Victoria trailed off. "What do you want from me?" She asked.
"What? I don't want anything from you." Dally said.
"Then why did you bring me lunch?"
"Listen, if you don't want it-" Victoria cut him off, "No, no, lunch could do me good."
"Then why are you questioning me?" Dally asked.
"I don't know, I guess I just didn't expect you to be nice and bring me food. It was surprising."
"What can I say, I'm full of surprises! Now eat up, doll." He said and dug into his own food. Victoria nodded her head as the bell over the door chimed, and a customer walked in.
Dally rolled his eyes and moved over to one end of the counter so that the young boy could pay for his gas.
The boy was probably about Dally's age, he looked to be middle class and quite disgusted to see a hood eating take-out at the pay counter. Victoria quickly gave him his change and the boy walked out.
"So," Dally started, "You coming over for dinner at Darry's tonight?"
"No actually, I have plans with Keith," Victoria answered.
Disregarding the fact that she was going out with Keith, he somewhat changed the topic, "I'm surprised he lets you call him that."
"How do you mean?" Victoria asked.
"Two-Bit didn't really like his name all that much, so he wanted a nickname. It was mine and Steve's idea to call him Two-Bit, 'cause he always likes to put his two bits in!" Dally explained.
"I've called him Keith since I met him and he was always okay with it, even now. I think it could be nostalgic to him." Dally nodded as he finished up his food and threw the garbage in the bin.
"Well, have fun on your date tonight, tell Two-Bit I say hi." Dally winked and walked out.
"Where'd you get French fries from?!?!" Victoria heard Sodapop exclaim from behind her.
Victoria chuckled and turned around, holding the container out for Sodapop to take some, "Dally brought it for me." She exclaimed, Soda made a surprised face, "Shocking, I know." Victoria added.
Sodapop took one more fry before going over to the fridge section and grabbing three bottles of water; one for him, Steve, and Gale.
Victoria continued to eat the fries while flipping through that week's paper. The bell above the door chimed and she heard a high-pitched voice squeal out, "Vicky!" It could only be one person.
"Hi, Wendy!" Victoria said, leaning over the counter to greet the girl. Keith sat down at one of the stools with Wendy in his lap.
"She wanted to come to visit you," Keith exclaimed.
"Aww," Victoria cooed, Wendy, smiling up at her. "Do you guys want some fries? Dally brought me lunch."
"Dally bought you lunch?" Keith questioned.
"Says he's 'full of surprises'." Victoria nodded while Wendy reached into the half-empty container.
"So, when do you get off?" Keith wondered.
"I told you, six o'clock."
"Ughhhh, but it's only one-thirty." Keith moaned and groaned. "What am I gonna do?"
"Learn to be patient." Victoria quipped.
"What does patient mean?" Wendy asks.
"It means your big brother over here needs to learn how to wait and stop complaining," Victoria explained.
Keith stood up with Wendy still in his arms. "Alright, I'll see you later, sweets!" He hollered and blew her a kiss, Wendy eagerly waving goodbye.
Victoria chuckled, "See ya!"
