There was an awkward silence in the room. No one spoke anything for a few minutes

"Do you both know where you went wrong?" Adi broke the silence

"I think I should start first" Adi's father spoke

Adi nodded

"Enaku solave oru mathiri iruku Aditya. I know I've been ignorant. Un amma vum nanum enga relationship vantha problems naala romba unhappy ah irunthom. And blaming you was easier than accepting that we failed to cherish our bond. The worst part is, I always knew what I was doing back then was unfair to you. I kept burying the guilt deep down. And when you finally left this place, apo thaan all that came to surface. I'll understand if you choose to never forgive me. What I did, what we did- was cruel. You deserved better pa" he teared up

Adi knew this conversation was going to be emotionally exhausting. He wanted to end it quickly.

He turned to Latha

"Ipo na solren. Ivaru maathiri apo realize panala na pannathu thappu nu. In my eyes, instead of seeing you as a child, I saw you as a hindrance to an already crumbling relationship. I was selfish. Na enna pathi mattum thaan yosichen, un appa va pathiyo, unna pathiyo yosichathe ila. Empathy na enane theriyama irunthuten. Like I said before, evlo sorry sonnalum I know it's too late Aditya. Thanks for giving us this conversation"

Adi took a deep breath

"No. That's not where you both went wrong. Your problem started way before I was even born. Neenga rendu perum unga relationship la effort eh podala. You didn't even want to give your marriage a chance. Oru vaati aachum, oru deep conversation irunthituka? Husband and wife ah solala, as two humans who live under the same roof, oru vaati aachum fix pana try panirukalame"

The yearning was evident in his voice

He looked at his father

"Neenga avunga kita ketrukalam, why she wanted to pursue medicine nu"

He turned to his mother

"Neenga avar kita ketrukalam why he was not ready for this marriage nu"

They looked down guiltily. They owed it to their relationship. They should've tried atleast once before deeming themselves as incompatible.

"Apdi oru conversation neenga pesureentha, this regret and remorseful conversation nadanthirukathu. We all would've been laughing, watching a dumb movie on the tv. This house would've been filled with giggles. And...and Sithara..Sithara would've been my wife by now" he choked at the last part

Adi's father and mother looked up. They realized where they went wrong. He was a child who grew up in a dysfunctional family. The only relationship he was exposed to was an unhealthy, selfish and toxic relationship.

As he experienced all the blame and trauma he was now worried that he might do the same to Tara and their future children.

....

Adi's father got up first and sat next to him followed by his mother

He started sobbing now. It broke their heart to see him like this.

Latha hesitantly patted his back. Seeing this, his father too wrapped his hand around Adi's shoulder.

This warmth that suddenly radiated took Adi by surprise. He has longed for this affection.  Even though he hated them for ruining his past and possibly his future, he couldn't help but take in the comfort their gesture provided.

"Aditya, Tara is a wonderful girl. Ava kita epovume oru nalla aura iruku. She's bold and fierce. But she's also soft and sensitive. Unna affect panra mathiri chinnatha oru vishayam nadanthalum hurt and anger flashes through her eyes. And iniku when you were down, ava unna comfort panratha paathen. Don't miss her. She's the one for you. Avalala mattum thaan unna purinjika mudiyum, unna paathuka mudiyum" his mother spoke

He took in every word.

"You will be an amazing husband Aditya. Nee avala avlo bathrama pathukura. Saptala, nalla thoongunala, comfortable ah irukala nu chinna chinna visyatha kooda gavanikura. Ava smile epovum apde irukanum nu aasai padra. When she laughs, you laugh involuntarily. Entha vagailayum avaluku oru hindrance ah iruka koodathu nu nenaikura. These qualities are enough to judge your relationship. You both have something we wish we had. If I could go back in time and listen to my wife, I would" Adi's father said looking towards his mother.

"Me too" Latha said, tearing up.

Adi looked up and wiped his teary eyes and wet cheeks.

.....

The magic that happened with Tara and him wasn't meant for them only. The same magic created happiness and sunshine in even the coldest of hearts. That was enough to assure him.

Maybe in the future when they have a silly argument, his fears might cloud his heart. But she will still be his Sithara, his lovely, beautiful, bold and warm Sithara. It was her or nothing for him.
