It's Tuesday, the day, we are off to Baku. One of my favourite circuits to race. George and Lando flew out with the Williams and McLaren team yesterday and I'm flying out with the HiTech team from Heathrow. Last night, I stayed at Liam's house because he lives slightly nearer to Heathrow than I do. I used only live down the road from the airport when I lived in Woking.
Our flight to Baku was at 09:30 and it is currently 06:00 in the morning and myself and Liam are raring to go and get the day rolling. As much as I love travelling to all the races around the world, I am just not too keen on flying, I just start feeling queezie.
Upon arrival at the airport, we check our cases in and then make our way into the departure lounge after clearing security. I went into Boots to buy a couple of bottles of water and some fruit pastals and quavers.
"You alright Pommie" Liam asked me. "Just feeling a bit queezie" I said to my teammate. Liam gave me a gentle squeeze on my shoulders to see if that calms my nerves. My teammate knows about my fear of flying and he know that a gentle shoulder squeeze helps but it didn't today. I said by a window with Liam and we talked about this upcoming weekend. Liam excused himself to go off to the toilet, so I decided to call my brother.
Lando: Hey sis, you alright?
AJ: My nerves are all over the place bro. I'm starting to feel sick. You know how nervous I get when I'm flying. I've got some fruit pastels because I can just munch on them during the flight, especially on take-off and landing
Lando: You do that because I know that will help you, sis. You've got your teammate sitting next to you on the flight, aren't you?
AJ: No Liam isn't sitting with me on the flight but he's sitting a couple of rows behind me. Apparently, I've got the entire row to myself, so I can't put my feet up. I'll see you at the hotel later?
Lando: Of course you will. Have a safe flight and let me know once you've landed.
AJ: Will do! If you see George, let him know that I love him and that I can't wait to see him.
Lando: Will do sis. Love you
AJ: Love you too bro, bye
Lando: Bye
I hang up the phone, as I see my teammate walking back over to me. "You alright Kiwi" I said as Liam sat down. "Yeah I'm good, just a long queue in the toilets" Liam said. I told Liam that I've got the entire row to myself on the plane, so I can use my row like a flatbed and he was jealous when I told but then he just laughed it off. I also told him that I've just spoken to my brother, that he's looking forward to seeing us when we get to the hotel in Baku. Liam was about to say something but then there was an announcement that came over the tannoy system.
*Passengers travelling on Lufthansa flight LH901 to Frankfurt, is now boarding at gate number 67*
Yes, we couldn't get a direct flight to Baku, so we had to go via Frankfurt, Germany. I was sitting on my own for both flights. I didn't mind. I preferred if i flew with either George or Lando, so I could hold either one of their hands, to keep me from having a panic attack. The HiTech team boarded the flight and got comfy for the next hour and a half and then once they got to Frankfurt wait about two hours before their onward flight over to Baku.
The flight took off and I ended up sleeping the majority of the flight until Liam told me that the plane was landing, so I woke up and just put my headphones on to listen to music. The flight landed, we got off, got our bags and re-checked them in for our flights to Baku. We went through the security channel and then into dpeartures, where me and Liam sat by the window and watched all the planes taking off and landing.
Time was going rather slow, so me and my teammate decided to go and look around some of the duty free shops and have a bit of a laugh. when we were in the sunglasses shop, my phone was buzzing in the pocket of my team jacket and I see that George was calling me. I tell Liam that my boyfriend is calling me and that I'll meet him over by the designer collections in a minute.
AJ: Hey handsome, you alright?
George: Yeah I'm good, just wondering if your in Baku yet? I just really miss you and want to give you a hug and lots of kisses.
AJ: I'm not in Baku yet. The team couldn't get a direct flight from London, so we've had to go via Frankfurt but it shouldn't be too much longer till we board our next flight. Me and Liam are just mucking about in the sunglasses shop but I wish you was with me. You know how nervous I get when I'm flying.
George: Lando told me that you were feeling great before you left London, but just listen to our special playlist and it will calm your nerves and I'll be waiting in reception of the hotel as soon you arrive because I want to be the first one to hug you, even though I'm going waiting with your brother because me and him agreed we'd wait for you together.
AJ: That is so sweet. I've got to go because Liam keeps bugging me to put a pair of sunglasses on and take a selfie with him. But ... I will see you in about 7 hours time. I love you so much Georigie
George: Love you too princess
George hangs up the phone and I put my phone back in my jacket pocket and make my way over to Liam, who hands me a pair of sunglasses and then takes a selfie and posts it on his Instagram story. Just after he puts the picture on his story, an announcement comes over the tannoy system.
*Passengers travelling on Lufthansa flight LH612 to Baku, please make your way to gate number 91 as the flight is ready for boarding*
Me and my teammate gather all our stuff, made sure that we had our passports and boarding passes at hand to show the gate staff once we got to the gate. We showed the staff our documents and made our way onto the aircraft. As soon as I sat in my seat, I did my seat belt up, put my headphones on and played mine and Georges special playlist and leant my head against the window and closed my eyes to calm my nerves.
About 20 minutes later the flight took off and were were bound for Azerbaijan and I couldn't wait to see my brother and boyfriend but most importantly I couldn't wait to be out on the track at one of my favourite tracks on the calendar.
