Yuta looked around at his surroundings in confusion. His dark blue eyes had recognized where he was immediately but that didn't explain how he was here. He was in the playground he used to play in when he was younger - the one he met Hiyori in. He hadn't been here in years. Not since Rika's death. After she died, he avoided this play like the plague. Everything looked exactly the same as he remembered from the sandbox Rika proposed to him into the swing set where he first met Hiyori.
It was nostalgic walking around, admiring the familiar setting, but unsettling at the same time. Everything had an unusual glow to it and all the faults in any of the playground equipment were gone. There were no scrapes, no loose screws, no chipped paint...nothing.
Yuta didn't understand how he was here. He could've sworn he fell asleep on his bed in his dorm at Tokyo Jujutsu Tech after the exhaustion from fighting Geto Suguru finally set in. He definitely did because he remembered Toge had gotten him a jar of melatonin gummies to help him sleep and he was about to take one when he found out they had expired. In the end, he just ended up listening to the voice message Hiyori left him, which made him decide to enroll at the school in the first place, something he had downloaded after requesting Satoru send it to him like he always did to lull himself to sleep. Her soft, saccharine voice was one of the few things in this world that soothed him enough to fall asleep like a natural Xanax.
She was his Xanax.
'Is this a dream?'
Even if he was dreaming, that didn't explain why he was dreaming of here of all places. He instinctively walked towards the swing set that brought back memories of when he first met the girl he loved more than anything in this world. He sat down and made himself comfortable right on the same swing that he sat on all those years ago and continued to look around the playground. It was eerily silent but not in a necessarily bad way.
His dark blue eyes landed on the sandbox that he used to play with Rika in. The sandbox they sat in when Rika gave him his birthday present - the engagement ring. The day he promised Rika that he would marry her and the day it all went downhill. A small smile found its way to his lips as he recalled how his younger self hadn't even known what engagement or marriage was. He was so naïve. Then again, he also thought soulmates were something you could eat....which I mean you could. He shook his head to get rid of the raunchy thought that came to his head. Damn his teenage hormones.
"Yuta"
Yuta looked up to see Rika, in her 11-year-old form, in front of him. Her hands were behind her back and a smile on her face. His dark blue eyes widened.
"Rika?" He murmured in surprise. Why was Rika here? Didn't she pass on?
'Am I dead?' The realization hit Yuta. Did he exhaust himself too much during the fight? Hiyori had said the curse was broken. He literally saw Rika fade into little particles of light and disappear into the sky. What was happening? Hiyori's birthday was tomorrow - or was it today already - and he was dead. This was not the type of birthday gift he wanted her to receive. Rika giggled at his visible panic.
