Her eyes stared at the hot wax dripping down one of the half-melted candles that lit up the dark room. Hiyori could count on one hand exactly how many times she had been in this room before. After she was first taken in by Satoru, when the incident happened, when she first enrolled in Jujutsu High, after she threatened the higher-ups to prevent Okkotsu Yuta's execution, and now...after Geto Suguru's declaration of war.
Hiyori had always been good at deduction. Her favorite genre was mystery. She had shelves full of mystery books including works by Ranpo Edogawa and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in her library back at the estate. If anyone asked her what her favorite story was, out of the ones ever published about her two favorite book characters, Sherlock Holmes and Akechi Kogoro, then she would have to say either The Adventure of the Dancing Men or The Case of the Murder on D. Hill. When she was younger, she was commonly found with her nose buried in a book. All that reading ended up contributing to her exceptional deduction skills
It was because of these very same deduction skills that she knew exactly why she had been called here even though no one in the room had said anything. Shoko and Satoru stood to the side while Yaga sat at his usual spot surrounded by his cursed puppets. All of them, including Hiyori, wore neutral expressions to hide the inner turmoil they were going through after Suguru's appearance. Hiyori turned to look at Yaga. Even with his sunglasses obscuring his eyes, she could still tell he was tense from his overly stiff shoulders like he was scared to tell her why he had called her here.
"I'll be participating in the death parade." She announced, saving Yaga the hassle of having to find a way to ask her the question without hurting her feelings. All three of them, Shoko, Yaga, and even Satoru, had been walking on eggshells around her - no - everyone had been walking on eggshells around her, even her friends, in fear that one wrong move and she would snap.
"You don't have to if you don't want to, kiddo. You know that right?" Shoko said, lips pressed in a thin line and brown eyes glistening with concern.
"Because Geto Suguru was my uncle, it also falls under my duty to stop him. I'm putting an end to this once and for all." Hiyori replied, violet-blue eyes glowing with determination. The adults stiffened at her words. She believed that it was her duty to stop the man who strayed from the path of light. This was, without a doubt, the defining moment that they realized they had failed in their job as her family, and the adults in her life, because no child should ever feel burdened with such a responsibility.
"Are you sure about this? Shoko has told me that you still haven't fully recovered from your head injury. Your cursed energy is still not fully stable and your senses are still dull" Yaga pointed out, hoping to deter her from participating in the death parade. Hiyori nodded.
Satoru's teeth clenched over her immediate response. His daughter was supposed to be enjoying her youth not fighting in a war caused by one of the people that was once closest to them. He silently swore, that if it came down to it, he would be the one who dealt the hand to Suguru. There was no way he was letting his daughter stain her hands with the blood of her favorite uncle. He wasn't going to let her suffer with the weight of killing Geto Suguru.
