You walked inside the booth and sat down, jotting down the findings of your perimeter sweep. You felt your cheeks get pink as you kept your head down. Your thoughts started racing. Ok, what was that? On my best day I've never been that ... rude? Smooth? It was so strange, it was like the words were just falling out of my mouth before I could stop them. I mean, for the love of all that's good and holy: he's the Hokage now. He's not just one of Genma's friends anymore. This was the first interaction you had with him after he took office and you chose-

"Uh (Y/N)?" Genma said with a tone of concern. "You okay?"

"Yep" you said, completing the rest of your notes. "Okay, all set. I'm gonna go check in with the east tower."

Kotetsu and Izumo looked at each other confused and then nodded slowly. You left the booth and headed for the nearby ladder up the wall. Genma followed.

You started walking along the top of the wall to your station. You felt a bead of sweat start to form at your temple.

"Hey!" Genma said as he caught up to you. He grabbed your forearm, stopping you where you stood. "You're damn near running, (Y/N). What's on your mind?"

Your cheeks flushed pink again. "I-" you started before cleaning your throat. Genma took a step closer and put his hands on both of your shoulders while looking you in the eyes. "Gen, I genuinely don't know what came over me" you said, quietly. "That's not me, it never has been."

"I'm just as shocked as you" Genma said with a slight smile. "Didn't know you had it in ya to be honest."

You looked at him confused. Genma continued, "I mean, all the years I've known him, I've never seen Kakashi get that flustered. You really knocked him on his ass" he laughed. You played along, smiling slightly.

"Was I rude?" You said, unsure. "That's the first time I've talked to him directly since he's taken office. I feel like I really screwed up. "

"Nah, you don't have anything to worry about" Genma said, waving his hand. You both started walking again. "Kakashi's not the type to make a big deal out of this. It's not like you cursed at him or anything. You were just a little ... assertive." You winced. "Confident?" He said, squinting his eyes in uncertainty.

You sighed. Genma chuckled and patted you on the back. "C'mon, I'll buy you a beer tonight and we can talk it through" he said as you both stopped at your station, peering out into the forest beyond the village.

"You're just trying to get me out again" you said, pointing at him. He shrugged and smiled.

"Okay, fine. Honestly, I need it" you said, smiling.

It had been a few days since your conversation with Kakashi. You managed to, mostly, get out of your own head but the feeling of confusion stuck around. Why then? Why him? Did you have a thing for Kakashi? Or were you just flirting for fun? Of the few times you'd interacted with him over the years, you never acted like this. I should go apologize. After work today I'll stop by and see if I can meet-

"Hey, (Y/N)" Kotetsu said, waving.

You rapidly blinked, breaking your trance. "Oh, hey Kotetsu" you said with a smile, raising your hand.

"Doing okay?" He asked.

"Yeah, just haven't been sleeping well" you said, scrunching your nose and shaking your head back and forth.

He nodded. "Genma's already up in the west tower, he wanted-"

"Excuse me?" You heard from behind you. You turned to find a man in his early 20's sporting full Jonin gear with his leaf headband pinned to his sleeve.

"Are you (Y/N) (L/N)?" He asked.

"Yes, how can I help you?" You said.

"I'm an administrator for Lord Sixth. He's requested a meeting with you this morning. Are you available?" He asked.

Your palms immediately started to sweat. Here we go.

"With me specifically?" You asked, brow furrowed. The man nodded. "Of course" you said. The man turned and led you toward the Hokage's office.

You turned to Kotetsu and Izumo, eyes widened with your palm against your forehead. They both gave you a thumbs up.

As you approached the building, you took a deep breath and started twirling a strand of hair in your hand. He couldn't fire me for that, right? No, that would be ridiculous. Maybe just temporary leave? Ok, seriously (Y/N), get a hold of yourself. It's probably about something entirely different and you're worrying yourself for nothing ... Right?

You let out a quiet breath as the Hokage's office door came into view. "This way" the man said. You gave a single nod in reply.

He knocked and Kakashi answered. "Come in" you heard from behind the door.

The man opened the door and gestured for you to walk inside.

You stepped into the office with your hands at your sides, trying not to looked panicked. Kakashi was sitting at his desk, his chin resting on his hand. He wore his green canvas vest with his leaf headband tied around his forehead. A few piles of papers and books sat on either side of him with some scrolls open directly in front of him. A picture frame and an empty mug sat to his right. He glanced up. "Ah, thank you Kaito" Kakashi nodded before returning to his work. Kaito bowed and left the room.

"If you would," he said, before rolling one of the scrolls up "close the door."
