The next morning you rolled over in bed and slowly blinked your eyes open. The piece of paper was propped open on your nightstand. An unconscious smile spread across your face as you turned to lay on your back looking at the ceiling. You were almost embarrassed at how excited you were for your date tonight.
Since you just arrived back from a mission yesterday, you were off from work today. You decided to spend the day running errands before preparing for your date.
After you got out of the shower, you got dressed in a blue long sleeve top and grey jeans. You tied your hair half up and headed to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee. As soon as your coffee was done, you grabbed it before sitting down on your couch and picking up the book you're in the middle of. You could barely focus on the story, you just keep thinking about Kakashi: the conversations you've had recently, the way his eyes looked at you, his silver hair, his jawline, the way he smiled with his eyes. You had spoken to him in years past but something about this recent back and forth just felt different, he had an attractive assurance about him. Any arrogance left had disappeared and it'd almost felt like he'd grown up even more. Like he'd finally released a burden that was gnawing at him. In your opinion, that made him an even better Hokage than he was already qualified for.
You smiled to yourself, taking the last few sips of your coffee and setting your book down on the coffee table. You looked out your window at the village, the clouds in the sky almost framing the idyllic image of businesses setting up and people getting their day started.

You put on some black boots and grabbed your jacket on the way out. As you opened your door, you were met with the slight chill of January air and zipped your coat halfway up before locking your door.
You were looking at some apples at the market when you heard a voice. "Well look who it is" the voice said, you knew who it was immediately. You turned to see Genma heading towards you.
"Hey!" you said, setting the apple down in the basket dangling off your forearm and holding your other arm out for a hug. He wrapped his arms around you.
"So ..." he started as he pulled away, you looked at him quizzically. "I thought getting you out to the bar with us would make you come out with us more but it turns out, it did the opposite" he said smiling and crossing his arms.
You chuckled. "Oh c'mon it hasn't been that long" you said, half closing your eyes and pursing your lips. "Plus, you literally saw me yesterday!"
"That was work, that's different" he replied. "I haven't seen you in a week!"
"Not even!" You shot back, pointing at him. "Remember we went out for a beer the day after I went out with everyone?"
"Ok fine you got me" he said, holding his hands up and chuckling. "A little less then ... You know I just like to pick on you."
"Don't I know it" you said, putting your hands on your hips. He hooked his arm around your neck and pulled you into his chest quick. You chuckled and he released his arm as you both started walking towards the other aisles.
"So what did Kakashi want?" He said as you turned into the cereal aisle.
You picked a box off the shelf and turned it over. "Oh that? It was just a continuation of the conversation we had last week" you said without skipping a beat. "He was just asking a few questions about how far the perimeter stretches on rounds, how they're carried out ... things like that. So he can make the proper arrangements" you said looking up at Genma, flashing a quick smile.
"Huh" Genma said, putting a box of cereal in his basket. "Seems to be asking for your opinion a lot these days."
"Yeah I guess" you shrugged, your heart rate slightly picking up speed. "I'm taking it as a compliment towards my work. I'm just hoping this means some sort of promotion down the road" you said crossing your fingers. You put the cereal box you were looking at in your basket.
Genma raised his eyebrow. "Yeah, me too. I don't know (Y/N), I just think he's got the hots for you" he said shrugging. You slapped him on the arm.
"Oh come on, he does not" you said shaking your head.
"Well I think he does" he said, raising his eyebrows playfully. You stuck your tongue out at him and he chuckled. "You know I'm just looking out for you (Y/N) ... I've always considered you as the sister I never had. I'm just treating you like a brother would" he said, winking.
You rolled your eyes before smiling and saying "I'd expect nothing less."
"I know Genma, you're family to me too. But seriously, don't worry I'm fine" you continued. You turned around and said over your shoulder "c'mon I need cream cheese."
After you finished shopping, both you & Genma said your goodbyes and you headed back to your apartment with your groceries in hand.
Ok Genma's really breathing down my neck about this, I need to make up better excuses if Kakashi and I are gonna keep whatever this is a secret for a while. Should I say I'm dating someone else to throw him off? No ... that requires upkeep. Maybe if I make an effort to go out to the bar with them more often, he'll get off my back about it. But then that just gives him more opportunities to ask about what's going on with me ... plus if I drink too much, I might slip up.
You sighed as you pulled your keys out to open your apartment door. You decided to put that aside and just focus on your date tonight.

After you let your hair down and styled it the way you wanted, you applied some light makeup. You walked out of the bathroom attached to your bedroom and headed to your closet, sharing the same wall with your bedroom door. You pulled your dark grey skinny jeans up over your black underwear and studied your closet for a shirt with just a bra on top. Your left forearm laid over your chest, your left hand resting on your right forearm while your right hand rested on your chin and your pointer finger tapped your nose.
You ended up deciding on a form fitting sweetheart cut cream sweater with long sleeves tucked in your jeans. You added a simple necklace and some studded earrings, adding a few spritzes of your favorite perfume as the last touch. You checked the time, it was 6:45. You quickly put on your long black fleece lined peacoat and your black boots, grabbed your purse and headed out.
You got to the Hokage building after mostly walking the quiet roads. You decided to take the least conspicuous stairs around back to avoid any attention from the staff inside. You started to feel more and more nervous after each flight. You'd been on plenty of missions that required you to continuously maintain your composure, it was automatic for you at this point. But this felt like your first mission again, back when you were just a genin: no idea what to expect, just raw nervousness and excitement.
You took a deep breath and tried to relax as you opened the stairwell door to the top floor. You looked side to side and quickly stepped out into the hallway and approached the roof door about 3 feet away. As you reached down to open the handle, you were surprised as it was opened for you. Kakashi held his hand out for you to hold, you laid your hand in his as you stepped over the door frame out onto the roof. He closed the door behind him.
He glanced over your outfit while still holding onto your hand.
You realized then that Kakashi had probably never seen you done up this way. Sure, in the past you ran into each other at parties but that was years ago and you rarely interacted (so little that he barely recognized you when you met again last week). It wasn't often you strayed from a plain colored shirt with dark pants and, more often than not, your heavy Jonin vest covered the entirety of your torso up to your collarbone.
You blushed and smiled as the silence grew longer. "Kakashi ... Oh wait, should I say Lord Sixth? Shit, I didn't bow either ... And now I cursed" you facepalmed your forehead with your free hand. The silence that hung had caused your worry to grow and immediately lose any composure you'd mustered up. "I'm-"
"(Y/N)" he said. You looked up as he met your eyes. "You can call me whatever you'd like when you look this lovely" he replied, eyebrows raised softly in wonder. "You're so beautiful" he said, sounding like he was almost out of breath. He was smiling under his mask, a light pink spreading across the tops of his cheeks.
Your smile grew wider and you let out a small chuckle. "Thank you" you said, feeling the swell of butterflies forming in your stomach.
