Chapter Twenty-Three: Sophie

Why was Sophie always getting lost in those emerald-peridot green eyes of Adrien Agreste?

And why had she been able to practically predict what would happen when they arrived at Atlantis?

They had gone to Quinlin.

They figured out Adrien's mind was also impenetrable (unsurprising).

He somehow didn't even guess that Marinette was human (a little surprising).

But still.

Why was a small part of her wishing that Adrien would be staying at Havenfield?

She wasn't sure; all she knew was that there was something about this other moonlark.

And her heart pounded every time they both stared at each other, like it was trying to tell her the answer.

She kept tugging on the loose hair around her face as they leaped back to Everglen, Marinette gripping onto Keefe and nearly tripping on her shoes when they arrived.

"Woah," Adrien laughed. "Clumsy alert."

"Are you even surprised at this point?" Marinette rolled her eyes, picking up her skirt and walking back up to the estate.

"Okay," Alden said as they passed the glowing gates. "So we've already done the probes, the detoxing, and Della did her shopping spree. All that leaves is where you two are gonna stay."

Marinette froze.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"Well, we would love to have you here at Everglen, but I'm afraid what would happen later on wouldn't end so well," Alden explained. "The way it works here, people believe that the more children you have, the less chance the younger ones will get powers."

Sophie still didn't believe that.

"Anyways, there's no reason to worry," Alden said. "We've already sorted everything out with the Council. Grady and Edaline will take in Adrien..."

Sophie mentally did a happy dance.

But why?

"And you, Marinette..." Alden said. "Well, we had many ideas, but... strangely, now that I think about it... Everglen might work out best for you."

"Really?" Biana gasped.

"Alvar hasn't lived here for so long," Della said. "We've practically disowned him. You can take his old room."

"Who's Alv–" Marinette began before Sophie cut her off.

Member of the Neverseen, Sophie transmitted to Marinette. And the oldest son in the Vacker family. I swear, Fitz can't go five minutes in the same room as Alvar without trying to kill him.

Marinette paled a little at Sophie's explanation.

"In the meantime, we made you this," Della said, handing Marinette a small pin.

A Vacker pin.

"Woah," she said, holding the pin. "What is this?"

"Every family has their own crest," Alden explained. "We normally use them to pin our capes together."

"Thanks," Marinette said, clutching the pin tightly in her fist.

"And this is for you," Della handed Adrien his own pin, only it looked remarkably like Sophie's.

"You're gonna love Havenfield," Sophie said. "Grady and Edaline are so nice, and the pastures are huge, and you'll see animals humans thought were extinct."
