Just a small boy listening to the stories his grandfather told him about the life of a pirate.

"The sea was treacherous that day with the waves trying to take down the old ship. But I knew we were close because a storm brewed ahead to only a small section of the water. Legend holds about a Kraken in the depths of the ocean dragging down ships to Davey Jone's locker. And by golly were the legends true of a massive monster with tentacles so large it could break a ship in half with one swipe...WHAM!"

His grandfather slammed his fist down on the table making James jump a bit.

"My crew just barely made it out alive that night. Then-"

     "Quit scaring the boy Jon."

James was scared but also intrigued by his grandfather's stories. His grandfather could probably write a book about all the adventures he has done in the past before he passed the ship down to his son.

"I'm not scared grandma, I love these stories."

"Aye, not just stories my boy, a history lesson. You'll need to know all this if you one day want all this to be yours."

James looked around with his grandfather's treasure in every corner of the house. All holding another story of how he won a battle or found the long-lost treasure chest of the mermaids. Silver, gold, rubies, etc scattered everywhere.

"I do grandfather, and I'll make you proud by being the best pirate there ever lived. I'll find so much gold and treasure that we'll all live like royalty."

James gazed at it all touching some of the small coins next to his legs. The sea was his life and in his blood. He was even born on the ship, or that's the story his father said.

"Tell me, James, what do you think is my most valuable piece of treasure?"

James instantly ran to the table grabbing a dagger with its hilt covered in diamonds and sapphires.

"Ah, the Amazonian dagger. The princess who fell in love with the man of the sea gifted the girl this dagger for protection. When she declined his advances he dragged her ship to the bottom of the ocean in a fit of rage and sadness. It is a thrilling story and beautifully crafted, it is not my most prized possession boy."

James was confused to see because his grandfather loved that dagger. Had it's own special case and spot next to the bed.

"My boy, things may be pretty and shiny on the outside, but not all treasure is specifically silver and gold."

James looked up to see his grandfather staring at his grandmother with loving eyes. My grandmother's family were the second most ruthless pirates out in the world. But her family didn't want to pass the responsibility to a woman so they offered an alliance to the Jolly Roger and that's how my grandparents met.

Being so young, he never got what that meant. The treasure was valuable and gold meant power. The more you collect, the more respect you gain.

"Of course grandfather, there's also sapphires, rubies, diamonds-"

His grandparents laughed.

"You'll understand when you get older."
