Marissa began her trek along the perimeter of the smaller field, her ponytail taught against her head. If whatever had spooked the goats was still around, then it would possibly stick to that area, considering it had an entire side located next to the tree line. She double checked her flashlight battery in case it became dark while she was still searching, twilight already nearing. She popped the barrel of the shot gun to make sure both shells were snug in their slots before passing the first electric motor of many along the fence.
Convincing her mother to stay inside was a chore. If there really was a bear, she couldn't exactly hold both a gun and flashlight as well as her cane. Marissa wanted her dad to stay inside too, considering his eyesight wasn't what it used to be, but she knew that was a lost cause.
"At least he'll hear my shots if I find our intruder." She felt like she was trying to soothe her nerves, feeling her grip tighten on the gun, but years of experience and countless other perimeter checks kept her calm as she looked around, feeling the weight of the flashlight in her back pocket.
She rounded the first corner near the tree line, squinting as the sun blinded her. The woman wished she had brought her ball cap, but she didn't feel like going to get it, either. She didn't feel like making that trip again. Thankfully, the sun wasn't shining over the field, and was beginning to dip behind the trees on the other side, so the farm girl looked at the growing grass. She raised a brow at the large swath that had been stomped down at an odd angle.
Stepping over the electric fence, Marissa examined the indent in the foliage. It didn't look like a bear had rolled in it, and it was too big to be a wolf's resting spot (she doubted one would decide to take a nap in the middle of a field anyway). She looked further on, spying a similar indent a few yards away. She didn't quite know what to think of it before looking to the tree line.
"That's a big bird." She jokingly muttered, stepping over the fence again.
About to continue on her little hike, Marissa squinted as the sun flickered off something shiny. She looked between the strange trail and the tree line she was so close to. Her curiosity urged her to check the clearing that used to host many parties, unfortunately abandoned after many guests moved and others died over the years. Something else told her to pretend she saw nothing, that it was just trick of the fading light.
Her curiosity won.
Fighting with her feet to take an unsure step, she slowly gained back her tired confidence of finding nothing. Maybe the scat of a bear or wolf that had frightened the goats. She hoped it wouldn't be the animal itself as her feet crushed dead leaves and sticks on the overgrown trail. It created a nostalgic feeling that relaxed the woman, remembering the wonderful cookouts and amazing friends, filled with laughter and games. The feeling was squashed when she was met by a large aircraft.
She fumbled with the shotgun, gasping when it nearly hit the ground. The woman hugged it to her chest, the bracelet on her wrist dormant. After several long moments of being frozen like a deer in the headlights, Marissa finally was able to think.
