Hailee was fast asleep in my bed, she was tired and since I didn't want to risk waking her up, I got up from the bed, got dressed and went downstairs to my office, I had a lot of things that still needed my attention, and now, with this whole Robbie attacking me and me taking the money back, I had a ton of futile paperwork that I was dreading.

I walked into my office and I frowned when I saw Elizabeth sitting down on the chair.

" Mrs.Arnett, what can I do for you?" I asked and went over to my bourbon and poured myself a drink

" I came to apologize, "

" I accepted your apology, you may leave now" I said and she frowned.

" That's it?"

" Pretty much Darlin, you know the door, show yourself out"

" Why are you acting like this? What have I done?"

I looked into Elizabeth's eyes." What haven't you done? You lead me on, you told me you were getting divorced and I find out you were trying to have a baby with your husband"

" I was going to divorce him, just... Just not now"

" Yeah, that's not what you made me think tho,"

" And that's reason enough for you to get him arrested and bankrupt?"

" He was already bankrupt, he was buried in debt before I even came to town, why do you think he was so desperate to get his hands on my inheritance? He is penniless"

" Could you have told me? You decided to just buy the house, buy the property and what? What was your plan here?"

" My plan was to keep you safe Elizabeth, my plan was to pay off your husband's debt and then move on with my life once I was sure you were okay and taken care of, that was my plan, but you... You had to lead me on, make me think you loved me, and you brave little husband had to humiliate me in front of Hailee's family, and I'm sorry, I'm sorry he got arrested, I truly am, but he was an asshole, and he got what he deserved" I said and she took a deep breath.

" What of me now? Did you stop to think about that? About how my life will look like now that I'm the wife of a criminal"

I nodded " I did think about you, and I decided that I didn't give the slightest shit about you, but Hailee cares, Hailee thinks that it's unfair that you will have to pay for your husband mistake, and so, she has a proposition for you"

Elizabeth frowned but didn't comment.

I carried on talking " you can work for her. Plan parties, events, introduce her to this lifestyle, be her personal maid if you will"

" I will not do such a thing! " Elizabeth said and I nodded " very well, good luck finding a job, don't let the door of my office or front door hit you on the way out, and expect your father to show up at the end of the month to come and collect the 700dollars your husband owns me"

" You are being cruel" she said and I nodded. " Yes, yes I am. You were cruel to me, you broke me, why shouldn't I break you? "

" Because I thought you were a better person, because this is not what you do, this is not how you act "

I laughed sarcastically " You have no idea of the person I am, when I'm not in love with you Elizabeth, I tried to be your friend, I tried to be your neighborhood, I tried to be your lover, you didn't want any of those, you wanted me as a toy to use when you were lonely and bored, you used me as a pawn in a game, so why shouldn't I treat you like you treated me?"

" I always thought you were better than this"

I finished my drink and shook my head.
" And I always thought you were honest and sincere... Turns out, we are both wrong... Now please, Leave. If you change your mind and want the job, Hailee will welcome you with open arms because she's that good of a person, but as long as I am concerned, I'm done will your bullshit Mrs.Arnett, now out of my house"

Elizabeth stood up and walked out of the office, once she was out of sight I let out the sigh I was holding in and I sat down at my desk and closed my eyes.

Why can't I catch a break?
