Warnings ⚠️: Mention of child abuse and dead bodies

Chuuya came into my life through Dazai. I would see them fighting and it was amusing to me. All serious Dazai was finally being childish, even in front of a 10 year old.

Chuuya would be my first comrade.

"Chuuya-san! I found a record of that song you liked". I happily handed him a worn down package.

Instead of hitting, slapping, scolding or mocking me he hummed, "Thanks, L/n. I appreciate your effort".

I liked him. Chuuya was loud but he was kind. He'd scream so loudly that the whole headquarters would hear but he could also softly say thank you with a small smile.

Even Evelyn was at ease when Chuuya was around.

Even after Dazai left Chuuya stayed. It was comforting to have someone around who you knew and were able to trust.

"How old are you?" Chuuya suddenly asked. It was a commonly asked question from me: people thought I was really young yet their brain didn't seem to comprehend that I could be as young as they thought.

"I'm turning 13 soon".

"You're so young... you definitely can't be offered wine yet..." he seemed to be pondering upon something.

Evelyn placed her hand on my shoulder. This usually meant that she was ready to protect me from something. After Dazai left this hasn't happened.

"Alcohol free doesn't taste as good... you're getting soda".

That night he brought me to an underground bar. Evelyn sat on my right side while Chuuya took the seat on my left. The bar was dimly light and empty besides us and the bartender that stayed quiet unless asked a question. Everything was made out of dark coloured wood with small table lights that had orange colours making all of the tables have an orange hue.

"What would you like tonight?" The bartender spoke. This was the first time I heard him speaking besides a small greeting when we came in.

"Same wine as last time", it sounded like Chuuya was a regular since the bartender didn't ask anything. "This little kid will have some soda". This time the bartender stayed still. "Some cola will be fine". The bartender nodded before turning around to get a wine glass.

"Why did you bring me here?"

"You don't piss me off".

I guess this was because I was one of the only ones who was shorter than him. Of course there were others as well but they still annoyed Chuuya more than I did.

I liked him a lot.

"L/n-kun, I have to research some traitors, care to join?"

When I was 14 I began joining Chuuya to missions. It was nice. "I'd like that", I glanced towards Evelyn who stood up and fetched her umbrella. She left the room with swift movements, "She'll get me few knives just in case".

"She can catch up if we go now, right?" Chuuya knew something about Evelyn but some things he was still guessing.

"That's fine, Evelyn can find me from anywhere".

I was still shorter than he which made people think we were elementary or middle schoolers. Then there was Evelyn who seemed like our mum, aunt or big sister. Chuuya was one of the only people that liked me more than they liked Evelyn. I also liked that about him.

"Shouldn't kids your age be in school?" It wasn't rare for a stranger in a street to stop and stare at us asking us that. "Or are you skipping?"

Chuuya, who was 20 already, was fuming. He was clenching his fists and almost shaking. I saw how his body began glowing red which was never a good sign.

I stood between the stranger and Chuuya, "Me and my big brother are home schooled and we were sent to run errands". We did/n't (depending what you look like) look a like. We could/n't easily be mistaken as siblings. I looked behind to see Evelyn, "Oh, thats our English teacher, Evelyn-san".

I know that Evelyn heard me. She'd go along with the act. "Well, well, Chuuya and Y/n-san, you ran off quicker than I expected. Your mother and father will be worried if I lose you two".

Chuuya had a crooked smile that screamed "I'm about to kill someone" but he was holding it together surprisingly well. "Yes. We must continue".

The stranger let go of her suspicions letting us continue.

"Don't EVER say that again!" He screamed in a high pitched voice as we got far enough from the stranger. "You too L/n!" I thought he was speaking to me from the beginning but it seemed like the first words were meant for Evelyn.

"Sorry about that. It'd be more trouble if you would've punched her".

It seemed like Chuuya accepted my reasoning. He raised his chin walking proudly.

We walked into a dark alley. There laid five corpses that were surrounded by fifteen or so black suited men that I found intimidating. The corpses were also mostly wearing black suits: three out of five. The two were in casual clothes and seemed to be the responsible counterparts of the slaughtering.

It was brutal.

You couldn't see the true size of the blood stains on their clothes since it was already dried into dark brown, nearly black, spots on the suits of the port mafia members. Two others instead, they had clear wounds that were now surrounded by a dark substance, blood. The corpses were put on a line next to each other to make it easier to inspect since the previous investigation before we arrived had already been committed.

My gaze landed on a bloody spot on the wall that still had few drops dripping down from it. One of these people had been standing there previously. Under that were was a line of blood, after getting shot the person slid down to a seating position.

Evelyn covered my eyes with her hand as she placed her other hand on my shoulder, "You shouldn't see such things".

I could feel Chuuya glaring to our direction but I understood Evelyn's viewpoint. I also appreciated her gesture; the scene made me sick. "I'll be fine", I grabbed Evelyn's hand gently lowering it. Chuuya had no reaction.

"Do we know when this happened?" he was focused on the investigation which was good. "Or cameras, are there any near by?"

"The constant shooting started at 10.36 this morning and ended by 10.58", one of the men answered. It took surprisingly long considering how little people died but I suppose they fought back. "We have a view of the entrance on this side but not the other. The first bullet was shot already at 10.31 but then there was  five minute silence".

"Someone who wasn't suppose to die died then", I commented getting attention of everyone. "If someone who was supposed to die did, the shooting would've continued right away, yes?"

By the end of it we knew that were was someone who didn't quite fit in. A person who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Killing someone who wasn't supposed to be killed must have ignited some conflict.

This became like a daily routine for me. Every week I'd see a new set of bodies and then work with that for the remainder of the time before the cycle repeated. I was good at it.

"L/n-san. Boss gave you another case".

It felt like I was port mafia's personal private detective, oh well.

"Do I have any executives on the case as well?" I only wanted one answer and it was Chuuya. He had more power in the port mafia and his word was the law to lower ranks, including me.

I was just 16. The adults of the port mafia had hard time listening to my word before they had a knife sticking from their shoulder and I rather not do that.
