Evelyn has always guarded Y/n through the nights. She'd walk around the headquarters and if she found something suspicious, she'd take care of it. She was a great help to whoever guarded the premises at night.
But it wasn't as good as many people thought.
Without orders Evelyn had to follow the logical path, which was the way Y/n would take care of things. She was helpful and would bring people who were working through the night coffee, small snacks and would take their post for a moment if they wanted to have a small break. This was the right thing to do.
Y/n had an instinct to protect themselves, which Evelyn only had during nights without orders. If something unknown moved in the dark, she'd throw a dart sized knife to their left and right side only wishing that the knives didn't pierce the potential intruder. Mori had deemed this a good thing since it kept everyone on their toes and insured that everyone carried a light source for Evelyn to recognise them. Though, he had forgotten one thing: even the head of the port mafia wasn't an exception to Evelyn. Only Y/n was.
Evelyn's head whipped to the side when she heard a step and without hesitation a knife was thrown. Then another.
"Evelyn!" Mori loudly whispered looking at her.
"Oh", she went to collect the knives from the wall, "I apologise".
"I was just getting something to drink". He was obviously not expecting to be dodging knives this late at night. "I assume Y/n is sleeping. If you have time go check on the intelligence officer, Ango-san, it seems like I'm not the only one to pull an all-nighter".
"Is he in need of emotional assistance?"
"Emotional assistance?"
"Is he requiring snacks, caffeine or switching out from his post for a moment?"
"I suppose he needs to be re-caffeinated".
"Very well".
Evelyn left to the direction of a breakroom. Mori looked after her sliding the scalpel down from his sleeve, "That was close". He was about to throw it before checking the knife that was thrown few centimetres from his nose. Luckily he recognised them to be Y/n's and most likely in Evelyn's use at that moment. Y/n would've probably gotten very upset if he would've killed Evelyn since it took them multiple hours in the morning to re-summon her.
Evelyn walked into Ango's office with a trey. It had few cookies and few cups of coffee, both for Ango. "Mori-sama said you required emotional assistance".
Ango looked at her funny. He had no idea what that meant, but if it meant getting snacks and coffee he didn't complain. "Is that some sort of new program Mori-sama came up with to keep workers in for longer?"
"Incorrect", Evelyn immediately stated, "It's Y/n's idea of kindness".
"Ah, they're a sweet kid".
Evelyn stayed still.
Ango looked up at her, "Do you have anything to add?"
"No". She turned to leave. Evelyn left to find the next person to help.
Ango heard the door click. "I need to get the kid a book or something".
...
Y/n always wondered why people were so nice to them. Especially guards who worked the night shift regularly. They'd all greet them and give a bag of sweets or something similar. None of the day guards did anything. Their first conclusion- as a young child- was that they were so nice because they didn't bother the night guards at all.
"Y/n, Ango-san wants to meet you", Evelyn told.
Y/n nodded before leading the way. It had taken some time, but now they were able to walk around the headquarters without asking anyone for directions or letting Evelyn lead. Y/n never really feared Ango, but found him a bit odd at times.
"Y/n, good timing", Ango greeted handing him a book.
Y/n mouthed a thank you before spinning the book around to see what it was about. Once they had read the back they looked at Ango, "Why? Have I not bothered you for so long that you decided to award me?"
"No, no", he seemed surprised by the question and maybe a bit guilty, why would a child think that? Was it his fault in the end? "It's for the emotional assistance, as you and Evelyn-san seem to call it".
"Oh", Y/n looked away. "Thanks, I'll read it many times". Y/n bowed before hurrying out.
