My father says he's taking us all out for a surprise
My mother hates surprises
But he won't let it spoil
We all four bundle into our winter gear and cram into the truck, I nearly slip getting in
We drive to a no thru road
It is dark and quiet like the beginning of a bad movie
And then
Flash
The first firework shoots into the air and we grin genuine grins
Something so tiny is the first thing to make me happy in a very
Very
Long time
My father takes the baby out of the car and holds her on his shoulders
The rest of us are happy to watch in the warmth of his truck
I look out at them
The taste of bitter sweetness fills my head and I wish I had gotten the father they had
The baby is so happy to be on his back
She's only two
She won't remember this moment
I know that
But I smile and watching the sparkling fire
Knowing that it's a moment I don't want to ever forget
