"It should be on the couch," you say as the elevator doors to your old apartment open, the jacket lying right where you left it, "Would you look at that."
Loki immediately walks over, picking it up and checking the pocket, relieved to find whatever it was he lost.
"So what is the mystery object that prevented me from getting more sleep," you ask, heading over to him.
"Well I wanted to give it to you last night," he takes a small box out of his pocket.
"You got me a present?" you say in surprise as he hands you the box.
"It was your birthday, it's simply common courtesy to give you a gift," he declares as you shake the box next to your ear.
"No, don't do that," he says quickly and you stop, undoing the ribbon and taking off the lid.
"Wow, is this-"
"Carnelian, I thought it was fitting, given your other persona," he explains as you take the pendant out of the box.
"It's an Asgardian talisman, used for protection, for when you don't have your suit handy," he elaborates as you admire it.
"Thank you, really," you say sincerely, taken aback by the thoughtfulness of the gift.
"Here," Loki gestures for you to give it to him and he secures it at the back.
"I guess it was worth not going back to bed," you smirk, noticing the genuine smile on his face.
"Perhaps, although we still don't know why you were in my room," he comments, and you take a second to think.
"Nothing happened," you state assuredly, "I know for a fact that I wouldn't forget if I slept with you Friggason."
"And I you," he says in agreement. You debate it for a second, but you decide to do it anyway, pulling him into a warm embrace.
You've only ever hugged him once, and that was after he told you about Thanos, because you felt bad for him. But now, you're just hugging him, because you- Oh dear god. You actually care about him.
His arms wrap around you automatically, one around the small of your back, the other holding your head against his chest.
For a second, you feel safe, secure. But the feeling fades, when you remember what happened the last time you felt like this. When you remember Jared.
"Ahem, well, thank you again," you pull away from him, a chill shivering down your spine at the thought of your ex-fiancé.
"We should probably get going, considering I don't actually live here anymore so this is technically breaking and entering," you explain, starting to make your way back to the elevator.
"Right, of course," he follows you in, the two of you heading back to the tower. You go back into light conversation, mainly discussing upcoming missions, and Loki explaining how the amulet works.
