"Alright, and lastly, your Santa hat." I set the hat on my little boy's head and it fell over his face. We laughed together and I tilted it a little to look better. "There we go, little love."
"Thanks mommy." He threw his arms around my neck and left a sloppy kiss on my cheek.
"You ready, Benji?" My ex-husband, Peter, came in without knocking.
Ben turned around with a big smile and ran to jump in his daddy's arms. I stood up, smiling, but quickly stopped when I realized I was smiling at my ex-husband. My heart jumped in my chest, but I pushed it to the back of my mind.
Peter looked up at me, letting go of Ben. I pressed my lips together and he smiled. It made me smile, and I'm sure Ben noticed because he pulled us together.
"Group hug!"
I used this as an excuse to hug Peter. He must have had the same idea because he wrapped both of his arms around me. I hid my smile in the crook of his neck and locked my arms around him as well. I could feel Ben hold an arm around me and an arm around Peter.
I took in his scent and noticed there was a slight change in it. Vanilla wafted around him and as good as it smelled, the knowledge of where it could have came from was bitter. That was when I pulled away and went back to my demeanor from before.
"Are you ready to take pictures and see Santa?" Peter asked.
"Yeah!"
"Alright, go get in my car," said Peter, pushing Ben toward the door. He grabbed my arm to stop me from leaving when Ben did. "There's something I should tell you."
My stomach dropped. I knew this was where he was gonna tell me he is seeing someone new. I prepared myself to act like I didn't care before he could tell me.
"Hey, look, we've been apart for nine months, it's time you find someone new," I said. "No worries."
"What?"
"I mean, you smell like a woman, so I assumed-"
"You think I smell like a woman?"
"Well, I mean, normally vanilla is-"
"I wore vanilla because I thought it smelled good," said Peter. He let go of my arm. "Wait, do you want me to have someone new? Do you have someone new?"
"What?" I shook my head. "No, I just assumed since you smelled like a woman, you have a new woman."
"I just liked this scent."
Peter and I awkwardly stood there for a moment until Ben ran back inside. He grabbed both of our hands.
"Come on, I wanna see Santa!"
_The mall was buzzing with people looking for last minute gifts. I don't even wanna talk about how long the line to Santa was. Poor little Ben was so excited to see Santa he was trying to skip the line, but Peter and I had to keep him close. If we hadn't have, he would be pushing a kid off Santa's lap.
"Mommy, look we're so close!" Ben whined, pulling my hand.
"I know, honey, but there's two more kids left," I said. "Then we'll get to see Santa."
I got my phone out to take pictures of Ben walking up to Santa and sitting in his lap. Peter and I made sure to listen closely to what he says so we could talk about who's getting what.
