Ember's POV

Did I know what we were running towards?

No.

Is that most likely a bad thing?

Yes.

Do I care?

No.

Does that make me stupid?

Yes.

Should I stop talking like this and get on with the plot?

Probably.

So here we were, running towards a luminous glowing blue whachamacallit, without stopping because of plot reasons.

"Where do you think it's coming from?" Rain asked me.

"How am I supposed to know?!" I asked. "I don't have any crazy super powers! I'm just an average idiot!"

"That's true," he commented and I bit my lip.

"Where ever  it's coming from... it can't be too far," Stella said.

I wasn't sure how much I trusted her, but I trusted Stella enough to believe her.

"Why do I hear boss music?" Stella asked suddenly, looking up.

Rain and I froze and looked around.

Welp, here goes nothing.

"OKAY!" I shouted. "REVEAL YOURSELF RIGHT NOW! MY NAME IS EMBER AYERS AND I AM READY TO FACE YOU IN A DUEL!"

"Ember, what are you doing?!" Rain hissed, but I ignored him.

"COME ON! YOU HAVE TO REVEAL YOURSELF EVENTUALLY!"

The luminous blue threads turned a bright orange.

"Come on!" I told the others, running off.

Then something slammed into my chest.

"EMBER!" Stella yelled as I flew backwards.

I got up and noticed that my skin was smoking, but I wasn't burned.

"So, you're immune to fire I see," the cloaked man said.

"Seriously?!" I complained. "STOP FOLLOWING US!"

The Entity stared at me for a good five minutes. "You know what? I don't even know what to say to you anymore."

"So just leave us alone!" I told him. "Go torture somebody else, gosh damit!"

The Entity laughed. "Fool!" He said. "I'm the main antagonist in this book!"

"In this book?"

"Drat! I said too much!" The Entity said, pulling out a scythe.

His next words made my blood turn cold.

"I guess it's time for you to die, fire vermin!"

"Stay back," I told the others. "I'll handle him.

"Ember! You're going to get killed!" Rain told me.

But this is my fault, so I have to do this.

I pulled out my Netherite sword. "I don't want you to get hurt!" I told them. "Not when you haven't done anything!" I swallowed hard. "So just... get out of here, now!"

Rain and Stella didn't run, however, they pulled out their swords, ready to come to my aid if it came down to that. And for that, I was grateful.

"Seriously? A Netherite sword against my scythe?" The Entity asked.

This sword... means a lot more than what he thinks.

"I get that a lot from my enemies," I said. "Too bad they don't live long enough for me to insult them back."

With a yell, I charged at the Entity, ducking under his scythe as he swung and stabbing his leg.

He howled in pain, before swinging his scythe like crazy, putting me on defense.

He's strong, I realized.

His scythe made contact with my arm, and it flared up in pain as the Entity knocked me into a rock.

"Ember!" Stella yelled and I looked up, completely dazed to see the Entity walk up towards me.

I'm dead.

"Say goodbye... little hero," the Entity said, raising his scythe into the air.

He swung his scythe and I saw no more.
