a year in haiku: autumn

dark hair brushes necks
collarbones grazed by sharp teeth
the breeze takes a bite

the squirrel scrambles
acorns mean survival and
he's behind schedule

a blue jay spotting!
sunflower seeds in feeders
a feast of summer

trees protect their bones
by releasing their burdens
isn't death pretty?

the air razor-edged
leaves are cut, floating down to
dry out and get crunched

kids press foliage
beneath books, vibrancy dulls
but fall's bright enough

november's ending
the last dregs of color drained
monochrome landscape

the world feels carved out
like our old jack-o-lantern
winter approaches
